Aside from Spezza publicly declaring that he won't play for any other team besides Toronto, why would Toronto do this for such little return?

Spezza has been one of their most valuable players this seasons. There's no cap implications in moving him. And they would lose the leadership from him on and off the ice. Even if Spezza were to be willing to play for another team, you'd have to drastically overpay to get him. A mediocre mid round pick does absolutely nothing for Toronto to even take the call.
