Klingberg for a Cup Run

Created by: Ledge_And_Dairy
Team: 2021-22 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Jan. 13, 2022
Published: Jan. 13, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Toronto should accrue enough cap space over the remainder of the season to negate the -19.8K I am over here

IMO this is a trade that would really benefit the Leafs going into the playoffs. Klingberg is a known playoff performer and would really round out their top 4. Raffl is a strong defensive winger at 5v5 and is an overall upgrade of Simmonds. This trade will also help alleviate some of Toronto's cap issues for next season as Liljegren will replace Holl.

Next season they buy out Ritchie (300k cap hit) and move Mrazek. This should allow them to resign Campbell as well as their RFA's

Braun is playing on the 1st pair right now because Ellis is out and has been completely overwhelmed. Braun played well with Yandle on the 3rd pair but has really struggled higher up in the lineup. Philly's struggles should emphasize that too.

Yep, we should look at those 4 games rather than the other 31 which my visualizations encompass all of.

Here, some quick vizualizations of Braun's usage and results this season for you.

His usage, primarily against other teams top lines. His results:

Brings goals against down, what the Leafs need. Also picks up PK time but I have a feeling you'll let me by with that. He's doing pretty well on an awful team, and playing an awful lot, for a 3rd pair guy.

Just in general, Braun is also a big defenseman who throws a good amount of hits. The kind of guy who excels in the playoffs once refs are a bit looser.

I feel like we have a completely different understanding of what Toronto needs here.

Toronto's special teams have been fine this year and same with their 5v5 play overall. Braun is a good depth guy but he is not a clear cut upgrade over Holl like you are trying to say. He is a similar caliber player that is best suited for the 3rd pair. Muzzin has struggled this year and that is very likely to do with who he is partnered with. Klingberg is an excellent puck moving dman with proven playoff pedigree that would really give a possession based team like Toronto a much more stable 2nd pair. If you feel that Dermott needs to be moved instead of Holl then sure.

Leafs 5v5 play overall has been ok. Their offense is great but their defense has been middle of the pack which Campbell has been the bandaid covering it up. For the Leafs to make a big impact, they need to do better with their even strength defensive numbers, not get more offense with little defensive help like Klingberg would bring.

Braun, as his numbers indicate, has been very successful in bringing the quality of chances against down while playing against other teams top lines. The kind of help which will have the biggest impact on the Leafs game.

I look at a team like Tampa 2 years ago, they already had Sergachev, Hedman, and McDonagh but went and signed Shattenkirk anyways. Shattenkirk is a PMD that is not great defensively. Did they need him for the PP? no of course not, but it allowed them to run Mcdonagh in a primarily shutdown role. Do you think Tampa would have been better off with Braun or Pysyk instead?

So we can agree to disagree here but I think Klingberg would have a much larger positive impact for the Leafs than Braun or Pysyk

And Tampa paid nothing to make that gamble. You have the Leafs paying a 1st and their top prospect to take that same gamble. The risk doesn't match the likely reward.

That has nothing to do with fit or not. You are just changing your narrative.

You have to understand that every legitimate contender will be looking to make a relevant upgrade at the deadline. I think Klingberg gives Toronto a legitimate chance. If you dont like the fit then sure, we can agree to disagree. If you don't like the acquisition cost I posted then we can discuss that. The 1st can be a conditional 2nd that upgrades 2 a 1st depending on results and/or Raffl can be replaced with Kiviranta

The cost and the fit are definitely related. Why pay a big price for something that doesn't fit your needs?

My god its like talking to a wall.

I think the fit is good, so why don't you humor me for a second and tell me your thoughts on the cost. That or just stop replying since we dont agree on the fit at all

On no, going "all in" for a guy who really the Leafs can't afford next year without dismantling the team further.

I have a feeling Muzzin is done after this year, that's why going all in for him is the right play

Even if Muzzin is "done", his cap isn't.

Trade him? He has full NTC next season. Certainly he isn't going to a poor team (with cap) and the teams he might want to be traded too....Tampa/Florida, don't have cap or don't want him. Even his last year has just 10 teams to be traded to.
And to pull out, "he's not medically fit",c'mon
