So the Sabres pay a second for a left d that they don't need, in the hopes that they can flip him- if they retain on him for 2 years, and hope that the return would be worth more than a second? The math is way off here unless Edmonton is offering more than a first. Think of it this way, buffalo is basically buying draft picks, so they have to recoup the second that they spent to acquire Martinez, and then make it worth their while to pay money and waste a retention spot for 2 years.
