1) The Pens have zero cap space
2) Hoffman is not worth a 2nd to the Pens with how bad his production has been. That contract is not wonderful.
3) Take Zucker back, remove the draft picks on both sides of the trade and there may be something.

I feel like the more Chiarot trades I see the more I'm kind of losing sight of what his value is. Why would a team give up a prospect and a high pick for him? What has he been doing really well that warrants that return? The comment may come across as dickish but I am curious.

Here's the issue with Chiarot, and I'm also not trying to come off dickish, but he's not good. IMO he's not worth more than 3rd, but I guess given the market MTL seems to believe they can get a 1st. I guess we will see.

Calgary in particular should not be in on him. He is a very similar player to Zadorov (bit more known for his PK ability, but I think thats more to do with the amount of deployment). I don't see how paying premium for what is likely a lateral move and at best a slight improvement makes any sense

I don't know how to explain it. Obviously you can't look at his off production for value, as he doesn't do much. However, if you look at what he did in the playoffs last year, and the rugged toughness he brings, his overall dependability...he's a guy that can make a huge difference for you in the playoffs.
He's definitely worth a 2d minimum. I'm sure the market will show that this year.

That was my return question is what has he done significantly better than Zadorov this year that would warrant that much more value. If the Flames were selling what would Zadorov fetch? At best what they spent on him a 3rd? If that.
Does this end up being Jamie Oleksiak from last year? Dallas thought they could get a first and lost him as a UFA?

Chiarot has been an average third pairing dman his whole career and if you do a deep dive into his advanced metrics you'll clearly see that, so I'm not even paying attention to his production. I don't expect any real offensive production. Chiarot punched above his weight class last year and that inflated his value, but how he's playing right now is exactly what he really is. Players overachieve at points in their career and that's all that really happened.

He'd be a fine depth move for a playoff-bound team, but IMO isn't worth the price he may get.

Just to give you an inkling into Chiarot. It's not good...
