McCann and Driedger

Created by: TraeYoung
Team: 2021-22 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Feb. 2, 2022
Published: Feb. 2, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This trade breaks down as:

McCann for a 2022 1st and Danton Heinen (Solid depth scoring option, could break out)
Chris Driedger for a 2023 3rd/2nd and Casey DeSmith (Salary cap dump and pending UFA and a new goalie option for a weak goaltending team)
Retained salary for Tristan Broz (2021 2nd round pick from the University of Minnesota). Could add more.

For the Kraken, this is a trade for a prospect and draft capital as they need to not only add quality but increase the quantity of prospects in their organization. McCann could be a rough RFA to sign and they can use the cap space to go in whatever direction they desire.

For the Penguins, this trade is made with the hope that you do not need the Kraken to retain salary of Zucker is out til the playoffs. Right now, he has an undisclosed injury and is out long-term. If you do have to retain salary then the price could be even more than I have here. McCann is a familiar player and Driedger is a backup goalie who has a higher WAR then one would think. He has shown potential as a backup and wouldn’t hurt compared to DeSmith, especially if his salary was retained. The lines are based on being fully healthy and shaking things up due to Kapanens lack of success currently.

Be nice, we all think we know what’s fair and what teams do and don’t want but we are all as clueless as the next armchair GM ;)

Thanks for taking your time to read this, folks!

just what they need, another forward who can't score a goal in a 40 game stretch. They moved him out for a reason.

I love how people on here want to run out Kap but bring in McCann. Just insane.

I’m not running Kap out at all. I think there’s potential there with him still. McCann is a streaky scorer, sure, but he’s been good this season and showed that he could play in a top 6 role in both Pittsburgh and Seattle. There’s something to say about chemistry and this is a locker room that I wouldn’t break up too hard so adding in McCann, who can be a game changer when he’s on, is worth it in my opinion. I appreciate the comment and feedback btw

that's not directed at your post here.
It's a comment in general in pens fans thinking. Post after post of running Kap out, and multiple posts on here about bringing McCann back.

That’s fair. My apologies. Kapanen is young and has time to grow. Guys go through slumps and a player as talented as he is will break through at some point. It’s hard for a contender to wait for that but there’s not many other options in this flat cap world. Same goes for Zucker. He can pop off at any moment and I don’t love how either of them are deployed in the lineups this year.

Mccann is better than kapanen. He brings the energy and speed aspect that kapanen does. And he scores at a FAR better rate than kapanen playing with lesser players

Expansions drafts are tough and quite frankly, Hallander is a solid prospect that I’ve enjoyed watching since his draft year. I didn’t hate the idea of losing McCann. It sucks but that’s the nature of the game and it allowed a guy like ERod to step up. It is what it is, can’t dwell on it too much

yeah sure thing, I remember how the penguins could always count on McCann for goals, it was like every 3 games almost like clockwork. Never a dry spell ever!

McCann has 19 or 20 games in 40 games. Kapanen isn’t even close to that. Check the underlying numbers too

McCann plays on a team with no other real options too. It does take away from the fact of what McCann actually DID as a penguin now does it?

bottom line is kapanen isn't helping this team win with their current core. he's played with every center the pens have and it hasn't worked out. an offszn move will look increasingly likely if he plays like this

20 goals in 85 games in the regular season for 3.2 million.
Exactly what are you expecting for that kind of cap hit.
Here is the truth, Kap is a good affordable role player, who won't be moved due to the fact that he's not only very affordable for his production, but he is young and still has potential to bust out.
The grass is not always greener on the other side.

McCann on the other hand, that you seem obsessed with, went on 40 games streaks where he did nothing and you think somehow he's a better player? I'm not sure how you work that out.

they gave up a first for kapanen!! he hasn't done much to help this team right now and thats a fact. kapanen isn't expected to be the best player on this team but he is just not contributing right now and u cant tell me u watch the games and believe he is actually contributing. they've played some weak teams recently and he didn't record a point

exactly why do you think a mid to late round 1st is going to generate more than a 20 goals per season player?
It's not. Matter of fact that is what one should expect to pay for a young, controlled, good contracted, 20 goal scorer. Go ask any team that has one if they are willing to give up that kind of player for anything less. I can tell you now, they aren't.
Let me know when he's gone 40 goals without a goal. Fact is he's fine. But you're hell bent on getting rid of him for basically nothing. But yet somehow think McCann who had 2 and a half years in pit did no better, and simply disappeared in the playoffs.
I mean honestly, in 6 playoff games last year he put up more goals and the same amount of points as McCann did in 12.
But lets chase him out for a guy who was ragged on for being a magician for his great disappearing acts.
