For Monahans bloated contract plus namestnikov Calgary will need to retain 50% or add . Zary and a 2nd maybe.

im willing to bet that Monahan wont accept a trade to Detroit he most likely wants a chance to play for a cup and given who the flames need to resign this upcoming season this may be there best shot at it cause i doubt Johnny is coming back next year unless he takes a pay cut

I think they'd try to move him in a deal that would get them a replacement otherwise they keep him through the playoffs. Now maybe in the off-season Suter for Monahan and hope he gets a bit of his touch back in a new location.

do you think he would sign for cheaper then he's making now? cause don't forget Tkachuck needs a new contract he's a RFA, Maginapne needs a new one and he'll definitely be getting a pay raise plus holes to fill for the ufas they may lose in free agency

do you really blame him though? i mean he is from that area and the taxes would be less so hes technically making more

No, he will probably get around 8.5-9M with the Flames on an 8 year deal. I dont see what the issue is

flames wont be able to afford that given they have 2 RFAs they need to sign one of which is already making 7 Mil and will probably ask for more and the other whos making like 2.5 who will definitely get more, Flames are already up against the cap now

I don’t think Monahan is moving before the deadline. I can see them moving him over the summer to free up cap space for Gaudreau, Tkachuk and Mangiapane extensions though. He’s underperforming right now but he’s a big part of the locker room and moving him may disturb that too much.

I also don’t think Gaudreau is going to Philly this summer, they’ll be up against the cap too so unless they move out a bigger contract, won’t they have trouble fitting him in?

Tkachuk and Gaudreau can both sign 9+ deals without issue. If it really came down to it they can buyout Monahan to create space, crazier things have happened. Suggesting Gaudreau needs to sign less than 6.75 to stay in Calgary is wildly inaccurate.

there would definitely be issues if both signed for 9+ Mil a year

Lots to unpack from the comments but the premise of the post is pretty good, I don't know if Calgary does it before the deadline but definitely a good option in the off season. As much as Monahan is overpaid for what he's producing he is a big part of that locker room and has worn an A for a very long time now. Still effective on PP2 and wins faceoffs. If they move on from here before the playoffs this year there will have to be a bonafide 3C coming back to fill that hole, beyond Lindholm and Backlund Calgary's C depth is Ruzicka, Dube, Richardson, Gawdin, none of which I would want to see in the top 6 if a top 2 guy goes down. Monahan can still slide and at least play half decent D on top match ups.

so hypothetically speaking if they traded away Sean you clear up just over 6 Mil sign both Johnny and Mathew to 9 Mil a year there goes 5 out of 6 Mil what are you doing about Kylington's contract extension he probably wont sign for less the 4.5 Mil a year given the year hes had plus dont forget they still need to sign 5 forwards 1 of which is Mangiapane who will come in at more then 2,5 Mil 3 other Dmen since 3 of theirs are currently UFA the flames wont have the money

So while moving out Monahan the projected cap is 33,425,000
- 20 ish million for Gaudreau, Tkachuk
13,425,000
Kylington getting 4.5 is psycho, he has played 55 good games of hockey, he has 1 RFA year left he is either getting a 1 year deal around 2 or 3-4 year deal around 3, look at Gustav Forsling, giving 4.5 to Kylington completely undermines Tanev, Andersson and Hanifin deals, won't happen. He has 25 points, turns the puck over way too often, is sheltered by Tanev and makes a ton of mistakes. He's been good but any team paying 4.5 for him is out of their mind
So we are now around 11,000,000
Mangiapane just had the market set for him with the McCann deal, he's producing a touch more but doesn't play C, call it 5x5.5M
5,500,000 left, Pelletier should fill a top 6 role out of camp, Valimaki should be the 3LD, wouldn't be surprised to see Lewis back at 800K, still a bit of room there. Plus Dube is an easy move to clear up 2.3M.

In no way are the Flames in dire straits, very moveable pieces that can clear up space.
