Description
Making the team better without trading 1st round picks or any of our top prospects (McMicheal, Lapierre, Iorio, etc..)

I feel like Laviolette won't play McMichael much in the playoffs, if he does it most likely will be under 10 minutes so I think having a reliable 3rd line LW would be beneficial.

Samsonov hasn't shown much consistency in his first 4 seasons. I think it's best to trade him now while his trade value is high and get a decent return. I'm not sure where Liljegren slots in for this season but he could replace Schultz next season.

Trade for a goalie, not sure what the price for Holtby is but get him and split the remaining games with Vanecek to see who gets the start come playoffs. Can either resign Holtby in the offseason or pickup a goalie in free agency for next season.

The last time the caps played the oilers he allowed 3 goals on 4 shots. That was right after he made 43 saves on 45 shots against Pittsburgh. There's no consistency with him at all and it's showed for most of the season.

Not to mention even if a package was slightly more I still think Hagel stays. The latest coming out of chicago is less then a 5% chance of getting moved.

While I do agree with the lack of consistency is certainly there, your proving statement is very flawed. You failed to mention that it was back to back nights against 2 playoff bound teams. Saving 45 shots during a rival game and then coming out less than 24 hours later to play against one of, if not the fastest teams in the NHL. Any goalie would struggle in that situation...

True, it was a back to back but it isn't as uncommon for goalies to play in back to back games as it once was. He's only won 4 of his last 14 games with a save % below .900 since December 1st. In my opinion Vanecek is the more reliable goalie going forward. He has a worse record that Samsonov but has a very solid .920%. I could be wrong but I think if Samsonov's inconsistencies continue it would be good to get what we can get for him now while his trade value is high. It's a gamble for sure but I think this helps them long term.

Eh it is still pretty uncommon for goalies to play back to back nights, which is why having a solid goalie tandem has become so popular. But I know that isn't your main argument...
Point is - I do agree with you regarding your analysis of VV and Sammy. VV is for sure number 1 right now, but Sammy has great potential. yes, consistency issues are a very BIG thing. But Sammy is still 25, which is quite young for a goalie (especially a Russian goalie coming from a different style of play). Yes he has had plenty of opportunities to "live up to" his potential, but some goalies take longer than others. I think the Caps should keep him, especially since his contract next year will be another "bridge" deal (doubtful more than 2 - 2.5 mil for another year or two). Just my two cents
