I can see you don't understand asset management. When teams have needs they attempt to trade from areas of surplus to fix those needs and just because they NEED to move players out doesn't mean you take less. While yes, there are situations where leverage comes into play, but not when you have player who would be wanted by more than a couple of teams. Value is value. Pettersson is not a cap dump. He's a solid 2nd pairing LHD, still young and signed to a reasonable contract.

There are 32 teams, multiple that by 4 Top 4 D per team, and that gives you 128. Your boy Pettersson is nowhere near this.
