Deadline and offseason moves

Created by: Jlabarre10
Team: 2022-23 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 14, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
What I would like to see plus what I think are realistic moves for the Pens this trade deadline and offseason.
Salary Cap is projected to rise 1,000,000 tp 82.5M

-Trade for Brock Boeser at the deadline. (I resigned Kapanen to his exact cap hit at the time of the deadline)
-Resign ZAR. took a step back this year. Could probably get him at a lesser deal with an added year to make him feel some job security.
-Geno has already said he'd take a hometown discount, the term is up in the air but sign him until SId's deal is up and reassess then.
-Letang is tough you need him. I resigned him in this one but definitely thought about letting him walk and snagging a UFA at a lesser rate but with Pettersson going in the Boeser deal it made it tough to want to let him go. The same thing with Geno, sign until Sid is up plus gave him a raise.
-Let Rust walk if you're bringing in Boeser, he's younger and will probably want about the same money as Rust would.
-Housekeeping with a lot of multiple RFAs.
-Heinen has shown decent chemistry with Geno recently, he's played well. I think it's a low-risk move to give him a slight raise and an extra year.
-I'd like to see some of the younger players like Nylander, Puustinen, and POJ make the team at least to start the year. Hopefully, they'd play well and give you some financial flexibility.
-Domingue will probably take the backup spot from Desmith. They are the same age, Domingue is cheaper. I don't think the Pens want to deal with DeSmith's inconsistency.
-Bringing back Boyle is a "hey you had a good year last year, if you still want to play the same contract same length see what happens" move.
-Re-sign ERod, started out the year hot but cooled off so maybe you can use that as a bargaining chip to not price yourself out of running for him. Sully likes him a lot, can play up and down the lineup. Give him a decent nice work raise and some security with an extra year.

I think these are all realistic moves that would keep the Penguins competitive without giving up a bunch of future assets which Burke and Hextall has said is the plan. They want to prepare for life without the BIg 3. Zucker will be back so that'll be a scoring boost in the middle six if he can figure it out. Nylander has proven to play at the NHL level maybe sheltered 3rd line minutes and learning from vets like Carter SId and Geno can grow his game if not Puustinen and Zhorna are there in the AHL. Maybe Poulin makes a significant jump. These moves also leave you with a little less then 4.4m for in season moves. Only one trade the trade deadline move from the previous season. Unclogs the log jam at LD gets an impact player in Boeser. I originally had John Marino in the deal instead of Pettersson so probably would need the 2nd round pick instead of the 4th. Would definatly need to add more AHL depth but they have prospects in college and overseas/Canada that could probably fill that roster out.

The only way you’re getting Boeser (or Garland) is if you trade Marino. Pettersson isn’t a fit for the Canucks

Rutherford acquired Pettersson a few years back when he was the Pens GM he likes him. He likes Kapanen, he drafted him and required him. He's come out and said Boeser will probably get moved. The Pens like Marino a lot, that's why I said the 2nd rounder would have to be put in instead of the 4th.

JR NEVER said Boeser is on the move.

Doubtful, Yeah they want RHS but GMJR has already signaled Boeser as the likely one out. Pettersson can play both sides and is reliable and I already said in the description that the 4th would more likely be a 2nd after some second thoughts. They probably won't qualify him if they hang on to him. Most Pens-Van reports are already saying Pettersson is the more likely one to move, hold up is most likely Hextall and Boeser working out what a contract extension would look like

When did he ever come out and say Boeser was to be moved? And Rutherfords not the GM.

Also just because he likes some players doesn’t mean it makes any sense to accept a lowball offer for our player for them.

Then again I’m not the GM but if we trade Boeser and don’t get a top 4 RHD back in return I will be extremely disappointed

when JR took over he stressed cap flexabilty and why Miller and Boeser would probably be on the move. Frank Seavalli had it in a Feb trade target article

JR is the President of Hockey Ops who hired his old AGM from Pittsburgh to be GM, I would bet money JR is calling the shots. Frank Seravalli had it in a Feb article about trade targets that JR stressed cap flexibility and why Boeser and/or Miller could be moved. It'll probably take more then my trade but he also traded a 1st round pick and a prospect for Ryan Reaves when he was here and then traded him half a season later

Seravelli was speculating on who could be moved. Nobody in the Canucks organization has made any comments about moving Boeser or Miller. They actually said the exact opposite about trading Miller.

Regardless like I said if Boeser was to be moved which is a possibility (I’d say more off-season than deadline) I would be extremely disappointed if Marino or a top 4 RHD isn’t coming back. Again not the GM so you could be right but I would be upset with that return

Actually quite the opposite was said, he said it doesn't have to be a guy like Miller Or Boeser moved, this trade makes zero sense for the Canucks everyone has reported Marino would have to be involved

why? Friedman has shown he can play, POJ can take over that spot next season. Kapanen isn't providing any value. You would net a 25-year-old forward whos played relatively well on a down year Canucks team and probably sign him for the same or less then someone will sign rust for

all reports have discussed Marino or Pettersson. Pens will not move Marino, especially with the uncertainty of letangs contract situation. I get it all you Vancouver fans haven't experienced a JR trade. I said that about a lot of his moves he made when he was in Pittsburgh but i gaurentee if a PItt-Van deal is done with Boeser, itll definatly involve Pettersson. I have no problem admitting I'm wrong if I am

I think they won't net as much in return if it's in the offseason or at the draft because he will be an RFA then whereas at the deadline he'll provide more scoring depth to a team like Pittsburgh who could make a realistic cup run. Especially if a bidding war starts. I think JR would be smart to make a deal at the deadline.

They are literally working on an extension right now… there is a mutual interest in getting a long term deal done….

The issue is every insider said it's Marino or bust for Van not once has Petterssons name been linked to Vancouver, JR isn't our gm, How ever said he was pressured by your ownership to make those moves hence why he resigned from the penguins, I can guarantee you Van won't be moving Boeser or Garland without a RHD coming the other way

he definatly didnt leave the pens cause he was pressured from ownership to make bad moves. he left because ownership wouldnt allow him to move MAlkin or letang. as i said earlier i bet money JR is calling al the shots with personal moves. and idk what reports youre reading cause all the ones ive seen say pettersson or marino

Why would you pay rust who will be 30 next year? He'll want a long term deal that gets will not be worth in 2 years when he begins to decline. Nashville will not give up Foresberg who is 27 and already making 6 million a year so he'll be probably in the 7.5 mil a year or more range. Boeser is younger and can still develop. Especially if he's on sid or Genos wing

I'd love to see where you got Pettersson's name from, As for the Canucks being interested in Marino its from Friedman on the Donnie and Dhali show, Rick Dhaliwal a canucks insider has also backed up said claims, JR was on Seekers and Price a month ago and said we don't need to trade Boeser or Miller, as for JR being pressured by ownership the man said it himself on the sports net YouTube channel, don't forget the guy calling the Penguins shots traded the picks that Selected Rakell and Gibson for the pick to select Tyler Biggs

Friedman on the 32 thoughts podcast yesterday said again Vancouver likes both Marino and pettersson. I never said they weren't interested in Marino but the Pens are very unlikely to move him

rust has been developing every year since coming in the league... imo he is an all around better player then Boeser he plays extremely well with sid geno and even Carter great locker room presence + we shouldn't care about the future it doesn't matter what the team will look like in 3 years once sid and geno retire
I'd honestly take 4 years of being the last team in the league to try and win one more with this two and letang
