I think the word on the street is that Varlamov won't waive for Canada. If he were a ufa he probably would but since he has 1 more year left, I doubt he will. A lot of players are being very tentative with coming to Canada based on current world events.

Leafs would also prefer not trading Lily. But Mayfield would be nice for sure. Maybe Dermott + 2nd + 3rd for Mayfield?

If Ben Chiarot pulls in a 1st+4th+B-prospect, there's no way that package gets Scott Mayfield - he's younger than Chiarot, has a lower cap hit that doesn't need any retention, and isn't a pending UFA at the end of this season - you get him for 2 playoff runs, not just one. You might think it's an overpay, but blame Florida then - they've set the standard, and it would be foolish for Lou to take less for Mayfield.

If Varlamov would waive for Toronto, that deal is close but probably needs a nudge more. A 1st straight up for Varlamov is fair (again, you're getting 2 playoff runs out of him since he's signed next year as well.) Mrazek is a negative asset at this point and if you want the Islanders to take him back, then you have to include a pick, which is there. But the Islanders aren't just going to eat $2.5M this season and next out of the goodness of their hearts.

The Islanders say no? I dont think the leafs would be willing to do this. Timmy is arguably better (IMO he is) than Mayfield, more team control and way younger. He is more valuable than any part of the montreal package.

Leafs don’t do this. Liljegren has been a great piece this year, and has been in my opinion their 3rd best d man this year. He’s not on the move from what I hear, especially for a guy who he has outperformed this year and is much younger than

I don’t get people’s obsession with trading Liljegren. He has been one of their best d man this year, and is only going to get better from here on out

Saying Liljegren is better than Mayfield at this point in his career is some seriously Leafs-tinted glasses. Could be possibly wind up having a better career? Sure. But right now he's a 22 year old RD3 getting 16 sheltered minutes a night and not contributing at all on special teams. Meanwhile, Mayfield has been playing top pair minutes for most of the season, averaging 20 minutes a night, including being on the top unit for the 6th-best penalty kill in the league. Mayfield upgrades your RD3 immediately, and you get him for two playoff runs (oh look at that, he has more playoff experience the past two years than the guy that was just traded for a better package partially based on his own playoff experience!) If you want to get a player like that, you have to pay up for it, and with Liljegren already having his ELC completely burned by Toronto, he's a less attractive asset than you might think he is.
