Why? Cause players never sign for less with their hometown teams? Or cause its Montreal and most people on here like to troll anything Montreal?

So many reasons for the Islanders to say no:

1) They're adding cap here. They definitely are not in a place to do that. Petry is certainly an upgrade over Mayfield, but not ~$5M more.
2) If they are trading Mayfield, it's to add a forward or get draft picks.
3) I'm not trading Dufour, kid is looking like a gem.

No from Isles, they get older, more expensive and do not improve in this trade.

Because he even stated back in January he is looking for a raise on his next contract..... has nothing to do with "trolling"

So did Tavares before he took less to play for the Leafs, not trying to be a jerk just saying that players often take less than they initially say to play for their hometown teams. That is why it is referred to as a hometown discount. This could just as easily happen with Letang or Kadri (although in Kadri's case it would just be a discount to play for his favorite team since he was born in London)

how much do you really think Tavares would have gotten on the market... to me 11M isnt much of a home town discount

a million less isn't really a home town discount in my opinion, and I'm not saying I don't think he is worth the 11/12 Million a year but if you really wanted to win a championship with your home town team i would have taken somewhere between 8-10M a season that other 2-4M on other players but I cant obviously just blame him Mathews and Marner did the same thing to me what Morgan Reilly got was a home town discount i can almost Guarantee he would have gotten more on the open market

So Tavares taking a mil less to play with the Leafs is completely reasonable but Letang taking 1.15 mil less to play with the Habs is ridiculous?! Gotcha! I agree it would be nice if players took 2-4 Mil less more often (like Reilly) unfortunately they don't lol.

he's not asking for only 7 Mil on his next contract he wants more then that so he's not only taking 1.5 less he'd be taking a lot less

Letang is asking for "in the ballpark of 7 MIl" see story from Pittsburg reporter that could literally be anywhere from 6.5-7.5 it certainly wouldn't be over 7.5 since then it would be in the ballpark of 8 Mil

No one will hence the reason he is in the rumors lol. I don't know why he would realistically ask for 5 years at 34 years old, a 3 year contract for a 34 year old is pushing it lol

I don't think I would go above 7 TBH, he is a great d man but could fall hard any time. Conversely he could also be good as well so keeping him around the same salary on a 2 or 3 year deal makes the most sense, giving him term means he will need to lower his salary expectations.

oh absolutely, i shake my head sometimes during free agency seeing older players getting these massive contracts and then flop after basically 3-4 years lol
