Expected Off-Season Moves

Created by: Campabee
Team: 2022-23 Montreal Canadiens
Initial Creation Date: Mar. 28, 2022
Published: Mar. 28, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
1. Assumption is that both Kadri and Letang take less to play for their favorite team growing up.
2. Team doesn't matter for the Drouin trade just a return of 2nd + 3rd. It also does not matter what year those picks are in or if they are conditional.
3. Going by what Hughes has said about not having a fire sale and also going off of his comments about being active in FA, I don't expect a lot of roster turnover.
4. Chose Pittsburgh as the destination for Petry as they are a contending team, closer to his home state and are potentially going to be looking to replace Letang. So IMO they make the most sense.

I get that, I don't think he is doing badly since his return form injury just feel like most thought he would be better in Montreal than he was in Arizona. TBH, I don't know what the return should be. He has the skill put up 2nd line points but never seems to be able to achieve it.

I think Kadri will ask more around 8M$ + for at least 6 years. He is over 1 PPG. I would prefer Strome or Trocheck they are younger and would cost less. Letang is too old and fragile and asking to much. He will not help of salary cap by replacing Petry by a higher salary. I would keep Dvorak he seems to get it back together with MSL.

Again…why would the pens want to take a massive downgrade in Petry? Especially if Letang is willing to sign at 3 years for around the same as Petry?

I don't want Strome he is too much like Drouin, Trocheck is a good option but not sure if he will be available or would want to come to Montreal. I went after Letang and Kadri cause I feel like Hughes is going to try to make the playoffs next year and he has already said he is looking to make a splash in FA.

You did read the description didn't you? I said this assumes the Letang is not resigning in Pittsburgh and only willing to take a discount for Montreal.

I think that if Drouin get that return, we will have to get 50% of his salary. If he gets in a new environnement and is able to put his injuries aside, he would be a really good top 6 or top 9 player for a contender at 2 750 000 !

He’s not though. He has already said he wants to re-sign in Pittsburgh and willing to sign and take a discount in Pittsburgh if they give him term. He’s only willing to take a discount in Pittsburgh and only wants a 4-5 year contract.

Even through his struggles he is still a guy hovering at a .5 ppg who consistently the last few years has been a high end faceoff guy. the term is reasonable as well.

Lots of teams would throw a mid-late 1st at a guy like that.

why are we trying to trade Dvorak? sure he isn't having a great year, but he has had injuries. Hes a really good 3C. 30 points, wins faceoffs. Sure the cap at 4.45 sucks but I think MTL should just leave him. like he has 19 points in 40 games so he is right where he should be point wise...and this is him playing bad? I think he is what we thought he is

at this point with Drouin you never know what you are going to get from him from day to day, i think the only way mtl gets that return is if they retain half his salary and even then may just be a second.

Drouin and Petry are going nowhere without retention or deal sweeteners.

The Pens aren't going to give him 4-5 years, no team will. I am not saying he wants to leave the Pens but he has to know this already. He is 34 I doubt any team signs him until he is 37-38 at 7+ mil. It is not unreasonable to think that if a deal can't be struck before FA opens for him not to be traded by the Pens. It also is not unreasonable to assume that if his rights were traded to Montreal that he wouldn't agree to a slightly shorter contract around the 7 mil mark he is asking for.

I always thought he is exactly what we are seeing, an inconsistent scorer who is good defensively, in other words a 3C. If that is all he is let's move him for assets and bring in a younger Center to play 3rd line at a cheaper hit who has the potential to be a top 6 C.

Don't be ridiculous, both have value, it might not be what it was last season for Petry but they do both have value since they are both good players.

I’m willing to bet there will be a lot of teams lining up to sign him to 5x7. And if there wasn’t. Why wouldn’t he just come back to the pens on a 3 year deal when the pens have stated they’d rather give him a raise and only a 3 year deal rather than take less than he has asked for on a 3 year deal with a team that sucks and isn’t close?
