Why? Why would detroit do this? they won’t be a cup contender before scheifele’s deal is up.

Detroit's not giving up that much for 2 years of Mark Scheifele, It's not like they're making the playoffs and winning a cup anytime soon.

Why would this be good for Detroit?

Scheifele is going to leave after two years and we'll have lost all those assets for nothing at all. Detroit isn't going to challenge for the cup in the next two years.

If you're so desperate for a 2C for the team then sign Trocheck in the offseason. He doesn't cost any assets at all and we get to keep him for longer than two years.

As others have pointed out it doesn't make sense for Detroit and it also doesn't give Winnipeg one desirable piece outside of the 1st. Both teams would say no.
