Fixing The Mrazek Problem

Created by: dannibalcorpse
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Apr. 12, 2022
Published: Apr. 12, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
You want Petr Mrazek gone? You buy him out.

You don't trade him with picks to Buffalo or Arizona; they're cap floor teams who value guys that have higher AAVs than actual salary. Mrazek's hit for the next 2 seasons is $3.8M but he's owed $4.2M & $4.4M in those years. Bad value for cap floor teams.

You don't trade him to a contender. .886 SV% between the AHL & NHL this season; hasn't been able to string together more than 2 games with a .900 SV% this season. Always an injury risk, so hard to devote $3.8M to a guy who'll most likely be a backup/insurance goalie on a contender.

You either work with him and hope this year was an aberration, or you buy him out. Saves $2.8M & $3M the next two seasons, and only has a penalty of $1.4M the two seasons after, which will hopefully be far enough in the future that the cap goes back to increasing $2-3M per season.

Just write him off.

Its gonna be fixed when he stays on LTIR like Bishop

He aint coming back from 3 groin injuries as when was the last time a goalie suffered 3 groin injuries in a season and returned.

You've laid the options beautifully. Buyout at about 1m per year for four years is the only option. Now filling out the team with 8 more players (Clifford is in the AHL)

lol i was so focused on the Mrazek thing I didn't even pay attention to the rest of the roster. But uhhhhh...it shows what Dubas has to work with this summer, yeah, that's the ticket

That's for showing the Leafs summer. Heck isn't too much different than other teams problems in this flat cap NHL. The only two moves the Leafs have to more cap without taking back any is return is Kerfoot and Nylander, or going with a bunch of 900,000 players and hoping they perform above their contracts.

For fun, I edited the lineup a bit to show what TML has as far as prospects that *might* be ready and threw a couple bridge deals at Liljegren/Sandin. They'd realistically have about $4M available next season to upgrade goalie/re-sign Jack Campbell. The rest of the lineup would mostly have to be under $1M guys, unless they find a way to move a big cap hit.

Seems about right, although having Abruzzese, Robertson and Knies in the lineup at the same time makes me nervous.
