5th overall

Created by: Lochness1202
Team: 2021-22 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: May 9, 2022
Published: May 9, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Cap hits need to work but this is the core of the deal.
Assumptions:
- leafs lose in round 1 and need to trade 1 of the big 4. Marner and Matthews aren’t getting traded and Tavares will be hard to trade. Nylander has value on a pretty good deal.

Nylander plays wing with Hischier or Hughes and giving them more offense. Holtz comes up as well.

Toronto clears cap and can draft top 5 and pick Nemec/Jiricek , a top D prospect.

Again salary for NJD needs to work but I think this fits with Subban coming off the books. NJD would just need a goalie and they start looking really good. Thoughts??

Would be a dumb move for TOR.

It’s already a 50/50 chance that whoever they draft at 5th turns out to be a career 65pt player. Then if you consider Matthews has only 2 years left on his deal meaning this 5th OA pick wouldn’t even be a contributing factor in the next two postseasons while Matthews is here

You take the time to write out the notes and you don't even bother to do the lineup?

If Jiricek is available at 5 I would do this in a heartbeat. Also Bratt - Hughes - Nylander would be very fun to watch

Not really.
Jiricek would be at least 2+ years from being a contributing NHLer which is after Matthews deal so it wouldn’t matter anyway

Not agreeing or disagreeing as you are correct its a 50/50 chance of the prospect drafted being able to make an immediate impact

Now usually if we look at odds, guys picked 1-5 usually have a strong chance of making the NHL their first year or the following year.

Losing Nylander is bad but. With the 6.9 mill he leaves behind Toronto can go into free agency and bring in one or two guys who combined will be at the same cap hit and will also have a 5OA prospect potentially ready for action or soon to be ready for action.

But yes there are to many factors to consider to make it either worth it or not worth it.

Still getting one of Nazar, Cooley, Jiricek, Kemell could be intriguing.

Regardless who they get, I’ll still argue whoever it is, won’t be making an impact while Matthews deal is running the next 2 years

Arizona wont be a team by the time his deal is up

They will either be in Houston or Quebec as I doubt Tempe council approves of their silly project and per recent reports is leaning towards rejection.

And besides they cant even afford that kind of deal

They cant even afford to pay stadium bills or their players bonuses. If you think they will be able to afford Matthews bonuses alone might need to recheck your math as 80-100mill will cripple them lul.

Seeing as they are playing in a 5000 seat arena for 4 years (unless they relocate to Houston or Quebec) doubt Matthews goes there as no star in their right mind home or not home would want to be in that situation lul

By then the cap will be at least 86-87 mill.
Is 16% of the cap too much?

Isn’t that around what McDavid got . 12.5 back when cap was 78?

If Matthews has another 60 goal season and potentially a 70 goal season I dont see why 14.5mill couldnt happen

That said I feel he will probs make 13.25 mill x 8 years with the signing bonus money reaching 90+ mill. Kind of like how Mcdavid's is structured

But who knows

14.5 at 87 mill is 16%
12.5 at 78 mill is 16%

So I don’t see why he wouldn’t
