So a player that sens fans have been wanting to trade for years, a bunch of unknowns and a first in a apparently very weak draft?

If Calgary wants to trade Tkachuk because he will only sign 1 year, that's way too much.

If Tkachuk is willing to stay in Calgary long term, but they are open to trading him for the right piece, it's not enough. Overall, value wise, it might be close, but in that scenario they are asking for Stutzle or Sanderson or Norris. They will want one big piece.

That ignores how unrealistic Tkachuk signing in Ottawa is. His ask on a 7 or 8 year deal will be 10+ million with front loaded money starting in year 2 (not year 1 because escrow is still high next year), all signing bonuses, and a NMC starting in year 2 (year 1 is an RFA year). Sens cannot and won't do that. I'm sure if it were up to Matthew or Keith, Brady would not have signed that 7 year deal with zero signing bonuses. The only consolation's that Brady received was an AAV that is maybe a few hundred thousand higher than other comparable players, and he got the NMC. In terms of salary structure, the Senators clearly made some consolation because Brady's contract is a bit front loaded once the higher escrow cap is ending (2023-24).

With that said, I think Tkachuk will want a shorter term deal, 2-4 years. That's the direction Reinhart went. They have the same agent. I also would speculate that it is a big reason why the Senators might be in on Fiala. Because he won't require 7 or 8 years, but might sign for 2-4, which means he could be off the books when Norris and Sanderson's big money kicks in. The reason aggressive agents/players will go shorter term, is because assuming we don't have this BS all over again with Monkey Pox, the salary cap will start rising again in 2 years, and GMs will sign contracts with a projection that the cap could be 90-100 million, very soon. Prior to the pandemic, the projection for the cap was 84.5-88.5 million, and that was before the new US TV deal. If the pandemic never happened, we're probably at 90-100 million, or higher. Players who are smart and aggressive won't want to get locked in under a cap in the low 80s.

All these Tkachuk to Ottawa threads where people want to see the brothers re-united. We're going to see the opposite. Calgary will trade Tkachuk to Toronto for Marner or Nylander, and we will see the battle of Ontario between the two brothers.
