Meh. A 2023 1st... It needs to be unprotected for the Wild to have interest and that would still be a gamble

Idk if the article I was reading was right but it was saying that if a team decides to offer sheet fiala instead of trading the picks come from this years draft so for NJ fans that think they’ll just offer sheer him will still give up the #2 pick. I don’t think guerin takes a 2023 first. I keep hearing he could be targeting someone in this draft. But either way we’re going to get good compensation for Fiala even though I wish we could keep him. Give us #2 or Holtz.

devils decline, doesnt make sense to trade the NJ 23 first with the state the devils are in. That pick may be five times as valuable come the lottery next year. Dont see NJ trading zetterlund either after an impressive first few games with the team. Why not just trade the 2nd overall pick for fiala? 23 pick and zetterlund is more valuable to NJ than the 22 first even though to minnesota, the value is probably very close if not equal.

a first round pick in what is set up to be the best class since 2015 from a rebuilding team is too much of a gamble??

they said the same about NJ after they signed dougie. the way it looks right now, they arent fiala away from making the playoffs. even if they were, guys that will go 10-20 next year would go top 5 this year.

Assuming the pick is top 2 protected, change the player to Sharangovich, and add a prospect who is the Devils 4th or 5th best prospect. That gives the Wild a young top 6 roster player who is cost controlled for 2022-23. The Devils are trending up, so the pick is likely in that 10-15 ballpark at best.

Ottawa likely offers 7th overall and a few more pieces. So the Devils would need to beat that. Even know the 2022 draft isn't very strong, they are still likely to get at top 10 talent at 7th overall. There is no guarantee that the Devils 2023 pick is high enough to compete with that value.

Holtz is a piece that would be better than the 7th overall, but I doubt the Devils would give him up for Fiala, who is a pending UFA. I also doubt they'd give up their 2nd overall this year.

That's not how an Offer Sheet works. A team can't tender an offer sheet to an RFA until the free agent signing window opens up. This would mean the 2022 draft would have already passed and that the 1st round pick moving in a Fiala offer sheet would be a 2023 pick.

Also, I think both of those are overpays for the Devils to obtain Fiala considering they are not a Fiala away from contention at this point. Giving up a #2 overall or a top prospect on an ELC who is touted as a potential high goal scorer for a pending RFA...just too high of an asking price for NJ, I think. If you can get that from another team, that's cool, but I don't think that kind of payment is on the Devils' radar.
