BURN IT DOWN how to rebuild and retool in one off season by ReelBigFan

Created by: ReelBigFan
Team: 2022-23 Philadelphia Flyers
Initial Creation Date: May 27, 2022
Published: May 28, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
First order of business.
Extend Sanhiem 5.5 for 6 years

I’m okay with walking away from Giroux, but not many good RW who’d sign for 5.5 lol

I overpaid both D in order to land them and I think what they bring to the team would change us a lot.

Our cap situation corrects itself next season, we have 5 mill tied up in retention, so that comes back, plus several million coming off the books in horny, so we should have more than enough space to extend Kerfoot, and give Fed and York new contracts. Not to mention most young guns will be ready to make the leap

Also, if we draft Savoie and Firkus with those two firsts and with these deal, our prospect pool becomes one of the best in the league again… okay, maybe top 15

Trades
1.
PHI
  1. Hörnqvist, Patric
  2. Samoskevich, Mackie [Reserve List]
Additional Details:
Clears 2.8 mill to give a total cap space to 6.7 Mill with 5 contracts to sign, which is far better than the under 4 mill with 6 to sign
FLA
  1. Lindblom, Oskar ($1,500,000 retained)
  2. van Riemsdyk, James ($3,500,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Pair of 3rds will be sent to Buffalo to retain 2.5 mill
2.
PHI
BUF
  1. 2023 3rd round pick (NYR)
  2. 2023 3rd round pick (FLA)
Additional Details:
Sabres eat 2.8 mill for one year
3.
PHI
  1. Lodin, Viktor
Additional Details:
Love this prospect but most scouts say they don’t think he will be able to do these moves at the NHL level, think the risk/reward is similar to Ellis

Zaitsev could be added to clear a roster spot for Ellis
OTT
  1. Ellis, Ryan
Additional Details:
Ellis is a risky pick up, but if healthy would be a fantastic addition for the sens, if he pans out, it’s a much cheaper payment than a 7OA to fill this hole, if not, then you can move future picks
4.
PHI
  1. Kerfoot, Alexander
  2. Niemelä, Topi
  3. Simmonds, Wayne
  4. 2022 1st round pick (TOR)
  5. 2023 5th round pick (TOR)
TOR
  1. Konecny, Travis
  2. Laughton, Scott
Additional Details:
Seen a few similar deals proposed by Leafs fans. Altered Holl for Simmonds and a late pick since it seems leafs fans value Holl as a 3rd or 4th and Simmonds as a 7th, so possibly leaving some value on the table in comparison

I don’t see the need to trade for those two players in the Leafs deal - they’re pretty set on forwards, especially RW.

Betting on Ellis is such a bad idea. We're talking about a guy who has played less than 60% of regular season games over the last 5 years. Betting on a guy bucking that kind of injury rap sheet being a difference maker through his 30s is like betting against a tornado as its bearing down on your house. That contract is more likely to be a noose around the Sens neck than it is a solution.

Meh, seems pretty fair. But that’s fine, just an idea

Idk, for this kind of deal, and adding Zaitsev also in the deal, I would take the risk, if he gets healthy, we get a top 4 defender, if he doesn't, the Sens can just put him on LTIR.

Sure, in a theoretical world where you can guarantee he would be healthy, he would be a big help. But again, over the last 5 seasons he's suited up for a little over half of all regular season games. The equivalent of playing 47/82. It's the same problem as betting on Matt Murray to be the starting goalie, except the contract is even longer.

There are so many options for Ottawa in pursuit of defensive support, there's no reason to play salary cap Russian roulette.

I think the only way it would work is with Z added, just wasn’t sure how sens fans felt about that
