Islanders have no need for Puljujarvi, and aren't likely to trade Mayfield. Panik is a $250k cap hit when buried, so there's no urgency to move him either.

Puljujarvi is a strong play driver and would be a big asset to the top 9 on the Isles - I think giving up Mayfield's walk year for a 24 y/o former #4OA pick with tons of upside would be a slam dunk. It's one of those deals where you say yes before the other team can overthink it and sort out the pieces once everything's settled.

Puljujarvi is more of what the Islanders already have. If the Islanders really wanted to move Scott Mayfield, imagine what someone would pay for him at the deadline? You could get a better package than this for him alone.

Here's the thing though - you're trading Mayfield at the deadline if you're out of playoff contention, not if you're primed to make a run. If the goal is to return to contention this year, and nothing Lou or Lane has said has made anyone think otherwise, you either keep Mayfield or you trade him over the summer so you're able to find your replacement and integrate them into your lineup during training camp.

Puljujarvi is an elite play driver and that follows him around even when he's not skating with McDavid or Draisaitl. If you're moving Josh Bailey this summer (fingers crossed) getting a more play driving forward that's younger & cheaper would be an excellent way to replace him. If it means that you're either seeing way more Grant Hutton than you anticipated next year, or signing a UFA like Justin Braun to take over RD3 from Mayfield, I think it still makes sense.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. Regardless of how well Puljujarvi drives play, he's a .6ppg player playing in an open system with Draisaitl and McDavid. The Islanders have enough of those wingers, even if they do trade Bailey. They should hold onto Mayfield and use those savings toward a serious top line winger instead.

My thinking was, with Pulock and Dobson on the Right hand side, someone like Mayfield could be on the way out to get something back. Idk if Mayfield can play the left side. I also kinda assumed Bailey would be on his way out of town and like Pool Party seems like the type of player the Isles would like to have. He's young and still has a lot of potential and I can't really see Edmonton bringing him back so that was the base of the trade. NGL I shoulda take out Panik I kinda added him to flip him in another trade I ended up scrapping. Bellows and a 2nd bcuz player and pick? Again value wasn't what I was going for it was more whats the right fit

The logic makes sense - and in a perfect world you flip out Josh Bailey for another team's problem at RD and have the ledger look like this:

IN: Jesse Puljujarvi, Veteran RD3 with $4Mish AAV, Aku Raty (yes! brothers!!!)
OUT: Josh Bailey, Scott Mayfield, Kieffer Bellows RFA rights, 2023 2nd, Richard Panik - basically three guys you didn't have a spot for, a hopefully late 2nd next year, and a good RD2/3 in his last cheap year before he cashes in.

I honestly think that winds up being a win for the Islanders if they can pull of the second leg of that and I might putz around with my own ACGM later to see if I can make it work.
