Retool accept a bad year

Created by: beantownboy17

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
A year of transition and mediocre play highlighted by young guys getting their shot without risking the health of our core guys. I think Pasta is here to stay as long as they prove to him they're intent on winning going forward, and if Sweeney hires a coach that works well with him. This is the avenue that makes sense because I cannot see them going for a full rebuild, the owners won't accept that. Maybe they'll accept one transition year.

FA Explainations:
Ahcan has the skill set to be Reilly/Gryz and with the latter out of the lineup, they can afford to try a smaller guy at LD.
Studnicka- One last shot before they move him for pennies. See if he can slot in at 3C or 2/3RW. Move around with Roy at C, or McLaughlin to see where he finds more success.
Chara- One day deal to retire as a Bruin and bring him into the org. Sweeney and Neely need a good PR move with fans, and this is it.
Rooney- Hometown guy for way too many years at cheap money. Just seems like a Sweeney move.

  1. Smith, Craig ($1,100,000 retained)

Additional Details:
Similar player, on an expiring deal, with retention for a cap dump. In addition, a player they don't have to resign in Roy, but I added a sweetner.

TRADE DEADLINE

A poor performance from Bernier and a desire to get more skilled at LW leads to a swap at these positions. If NJD is locked into the playoffs, a 1st is possible, otherwise it's probably a conditional 2nd.
NJD
  1. DeBrusk, Jake
  2. Ullmark, Linus
  3. 2023 3rd round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Assuming Ullmark plays well, and Debrusk has another year of proven scoring at great value, sell high.

If the devils need ullmark by the TDL, they aren’t in a position to trade for him because they’d be far out of the playoff race

Would the Bruins do Bellows and two 3rds for Smith and Reilly?

I'm truly surprised at how Ullmark's gameplay did not increase in Boston from his time in Buffalo. Boston's system and D is definitely better so I thought Ullmark would show the league how good he is. Maybe he just had a down year, but I wouldn't give up on him after 1 season.

I don’t see the Devils moving a potential high pick for those two.

I like how thorough this is but what if your pre-tdl line-ups outperform expectations? Who would you keep and would Marchand slot in differently?

I'm operating on the assumption that the Bs would be bottom 3 in the division by the trade deadline. If they outperform, it would be because young players are outperforming expectations, and that's a good thing. The point of the NJD trade is to get assets for players who take up too much cap space in Boston, but if they're worth the money, then I guess we'd keep them.

I addressed that, a 2nd if they're a fringe playoff team, a 1st only if they're locked in for the run (likely the 1st would be bottom third of the draft)

I think the Devils have enough offensive firepower and a strong D core to be very competitive in the Metro, but goaltending will continue to kill them. Bernier is a waste of money, and Wedgewood continues to prove he's not a #1, so they need a more surefire guy in net. Think Oilers this past season. Great in all areas but just a patchwork goalie situation that ultimately killed them

Most likely, Bellows is a solid guy but the Bs are desperate for center depth. Roy is the guy I liked the most out of the VGK trade. Is there a comparable center on NJ?

I don't think he had a down season, I think he played great especially down the stretch, but this team wants Swayman and will hang Ullmark out to dry to do it
