Post cup AVS - Kadri leaves and core set up for more

Created by: ltpppvvv
Team: 2022-23 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 20, 2022

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
TLDR; how to keep the core top 6 and top 4 for years to come and keep the strong forechecking with D support identity. And do not trade Girard.

It seems that Kuemper 5Mx4/5 Nichushkin 6Mx6 and Lekhonen 4Mx4/5 are considered fair deals.
Kadri and Burakovsky sadly have to leave, as there is no way to keep the D core together otherwise.
Pandemic screwed the Avs here. It seems the cap will rise by fixed amount of just 1M until 24/25, and then the expected jump is in the 5-6M range.
I think in the next 3 seasons keeping the core together should be prioritized until that cap jump. Below everything you will find, in my opinion, notable signings for the 2 seasons after the upcoming.

--Upcoming season's signings, apart from the 2 most important pieces, reflect that needed flexibility:
Stastny - 3.5Mx1 should be possible if he wants to come back
Sturm - 1.5-2Mx1 + Gudbranson - 1.75Mx2 combo
or Sturm - 1.5-2Mx2 + Dman up to 2-3Mx1
I would try to get Sturm on a one year prove it deal, if not possible then find a one year D.
Stastny replacements could be Johan Larsson, Blackwell or Aston-Reese - cheaper, less O more D and forecheck. One year D I don't know, could be Lyubushkin etc.

This way, next year up to 9M in cap space would be freed (dump or buyout MacDermid's last year for very late pick) for 23/24 season, and up to 3M for 24/25. That should be enough to keep these players. Top 6 and Top 4 D secured for many years, bottom 6 and bottom pair bridge until cap spike.

--Notable signings for next season 23/24:
MacK - 12Mx8 from EJ, Newhook 3.5Mx3 from JT, EJ minimum, JT leaves = 0 total change
Byram - 6Mx6 = 5M needed
Myers and Sedlak = 2-3M needed (on top of current salary) depending on how good they are
Total = 7-8M needed, maybe 9M with Sturm
--Notable for season 24-25:
Toews - 6-7Mx5 = 2-3M needed depending on if he keeps his current play, he will be 30
Francouz - 2Mx2 = 0 change
Total = 2-3M needed

AHL, minors extended etc.

I don't agree with is the Sturm AAV. He should be closer to 1M, if not then go with Helm again or someone like him at 4C

I don't think Sakic will trade Macdermid right after extending him but that's a very minor move anyway so whatever

Aside from that this looks pretty good and is well thought out. Maybe add in a couple minor trades for prospect swaps (Kaut & Bowers?)

The only thing MacDermid will be mentoring players on is how to fight and how to eat nachos in the press box for the playoffs.

seems like a waste to just let manson walk to sign an old stas and gudbranson. I think there will be enough money, sakic will figure it all out

Sakic will negotiate hard, I’d throw the Rust contract at Nichushkin that gets his AAV down to 5.25, Lehkonen I’d throw years on it to get him down to $3.5, Statsny if you can’t get him to come for $2M he isn’t coming for $3.5M, Sturm is overpaid by about a $1M get rid of Gudbranson and resign Manson.

I agree on the Sturm AAV, and if Helm does not retire I too was impressed more by him these playoffs. I just thought since we traded Jost for Sturm that Sakic would give him year or two more.
I put trading MacDermid just as an option for 23/24 if Avs need a million more in cap space, but yeah, otherwise just keep him till the end.

And sadly I don't know much about other teams' prospects, but sure, I agree if it's not working here. Saw on some other post how Kaut's game is not really suitable for Bednar's system, so swapping them for fast and strong bottom 6 prospects maybe.

I agree, but I think term will be the issue with him, this upcoming season I think the Avs could afford him for up to 4M, but later when Byram, Newhook, Toews and younger guys in bottom 6 I don't know how it will be possible. And since he is 30 I think he would like one more multiyear deal. I do hope Sakic figures something out cause he seems great partner to Girard.

Although yes, that could be one way to bring Manson back, save 1-1.5 M long term on Lehkonen and Nichushkin, and add it to Gudbransons 1.7, and almost there.
