Finding out your core just like Detroit

Created by: Momz
Team: 2022-23 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 22, 2022
Published: Jun. 22, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Similar to the Red Wings. This is a year to identify your core that is expected to lift you to the playoffs in a few years. Some guys will have opportunities (JJ Peterka/Quinn).

Now the Sabres had a strong end to their season which lead to some hope, some fans don't want just to roll the same lineup without some acquisitions.

I think bringing Letang to surround Dahlin and Power would be a great move as long as it's a 2yr deal (he's 35). I think the Sabres can afford to overpay a little since it's only 2 years and because the rest of the lineup costs basically nothing, not to mention that Okposo's contract is up next year. Ville Husso and Ukko-Pekka will be a 1A/1B tandem which is an upgrade over the goaltending they had in the past year.

The Monahan deal is a good cap dump for Buffalo.

I think they definitely can get more than 75pts this season.

Buffalo is just a couple $K above the cap floor. I am taking on a cap dump. I thought about JVR but I went with Monahan since the Flames are desperate for any money they can find AND the sweetener to take the cap dump has a higher value.

My goal is just to gain assets.

There will be healthy scratches and there will be injuries that will allow Monahan to see ice time THAT'S IF he recovers. He could also possibly just stay on (LT)IR without taking time away from the young players.

Anyway, there is only 1 year remaining on his contract and at no point, the Sabres will have salary cap issues.
CGY
  1. 2022 5th round pick (NJD)
Additional Details:
(Copy paste from my Detroit team).

You may have 27M available. But you have to re-sign 3 of your best scorers AND you also have to fill your roster since you only have 12 roster players signed (excluding Monahan).

Every. Penny. Matters.

Even if you decide to give on one of the top 3 FAs

And for a team that still believes that it can contend, the picks have lesser importance to them than the money (especially a 2024 pick).

Honestly I think this is really good. I've tried before to figure out a way for Buffalo to get to the floor while still being able to bring up Quinn, Peterka, etc, and this is a good way of doing it in my opinion.

Monahan is not dead. And not dead cap. Everyone thinks CGY will have to pay to move him, but that’s not the case. CGY isn’t doing this deal.

I’m also going to go out on a limb here and suggest there’s no chance Letang is signing a 2-year deal in BUF of all places. If he leaves PIT, it will be for a 4-year deal to a team that might make playoffs. BUF isn’t that destination yet.

In his worst possible year, with an injured hip that required surgery, playing on flames 4th line he was still producing at a 35pt pace with good underlyings and strong in the dot.

Only has one year left of his contract at 27 years old. Still 3rd highest producer in draft class. Think a team would take the bounce back risk for way cheaper then this.

Wouldn't be upset at all if cgy kept him.

Edit: not to mentiom he shot at 7% last year. Has a career avg of 14%

That's cool than keep him. The guy has been dwindling for 3yrs. He's had some major injuries other than the hips to. Guess will see, always liked him. Tough **** but he's a pretty used 27yr old.

Why? Tell me he hasn't been beat up the last 4yrs. Herniated Disc's, Wrist, Hernia surgery, 2 hip surgeries. And a few other things. He's a beat up player who's been on downward spiral for 3yrs

Herniated disc was 6 years ago, Wrist was 5 years ago, 4 years ago he only had a cracked thumb, and 3 years ago nothing. Lastly he's only been on the "a downward spiral" for 2 years since 19/20 was right in line with his career average scoring. You can't look at his 1 way above average scoring season and consider an expected regression back to normal a "a downward spiral."

Pretty massive reaches in your take here

So his injuries go back even further. He hasn't come close to his 82pt season in 3yrs. And don't say well if he would have played he could have did this or that. Well he didn't because he's been hurt. You know what makes a hockey player worth something other than points is a available hockey player and he hasn't been that.

LMAO what? You literally attempted to argue he had multiple injuries in the last 4 years and were proven wrong. Obviously the Disc and wrist injury no longer effect him because they were both before his 82 point season. Meaning he was fully healthy for that

Would have played? He did play, that's the entire reason people think he's crap now is because he played through 44 games on a hip that needed surgery last year, and somewhere between 50-65 on his other bad hip this year. The guy just plays through everything. Calgary didn't even know he was hurting that bad until he approached the team at the end of March and got X-Rays.

However, he got the surgery and should be fully healthy by training camp. If he is not healthy Calgary will place him on LTIR for the season

Sorry my time frame is off, when was his last full season. He is a used 27yr old that has had multiple injuries, he has not produced because of his injuries, he is still injured until he proves he's not. Would I take him for the picks, SURE, but I won't give you a asset for him. Like I said I like him, but wouldn't give anything for him right now.

I understand your view but the entire idea of a team taking him is to bet on him reforming now that he is healthy. In reality Calgary probably keeps him and moves Lucic instead
