Millerless Canucks

Created by: EmilieCastonguay
Team: 2022-23 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Jun. 27, 2022
Published: Jun. 27, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Moves:

1. Miller would extend with the Flyers - Chuck Fletcher, John Tortorella and Flyers ownership have zero patience for a rebuild. I anticipate that JVR will be moved out (at a loss) to facilitate, in addition to other players who are not "Torts-style" players.

Salary retention at 50% for Miller helps with the Flyers "re-tool" for the 22-23 season; the 15 OA is a further offset and also justifies the inclusion of "ready for NHL" young players in Attard and Frost as well as the 5 OA, which should help the Canucks advance their BPA-strategy (likely netting one of Jiricek or Nemec).

2. I think Garland (and his contract) net Bernard-Docker and the TBL 2nd (which is essentially a third) as well as a 2023 2nd. Total fair value for a 2nd line player who is signed to a reasonable contract. Ottawa needs to move past accumulating picks and start moving forward. Dorian knows this; deep down, Sens fans know that too.

3. Ferland to Vegas nets them more LTI space; even with the addition of Weber's LTI deal, they cannot resign players like Hague and Howden *ESPECIALLY* after resigning Reilly Smith to a reported 3 x $5M deal *AND* moving out Alec Martinez (as rumoured). Roy is the cost of doing business.

4. Dickinson to Seattle for a 6th. Change of venue, without having to move out of the Pacific Northwest. Honestly, this trade may not even happen and the Canucks could find a place for him on the 4th line as a regular instead of a Will Lockwood.

The Non-Moves:

- Team would need to hang onto Poolman; his injury status and contract make it all but impossible to move on from him.
- Team would do well to hang onto Pearson and Myers for this season and re-evaluate come the TDL and/or the 22/23 offseason.
- Team would hang onto Schenn and re-evaluate at the TDL as they value his leadership and ability to guide young players. I anticipate a player development role in his future if he wants it.

a.) Pearson: his 7-team modified NTC and salary put dampers on his trade value. Despite Rutherford having dealt him away previously, he is a veteran on the team and can spell off a Kuzmenko or Podkolzin if they are unable to score consistently.

b.) Myers: his 10-team NTC and salary also have an effect on his trade value *PLUS* in this plan, Vancouver will be putting a fair amount of pressure on young defenders in Attard and Bernard-Docker. Yes, Schenn and Dermott are still around to spell off the young players as warranted, but they cannot be consistently counted on for contributions day-in and day-out in a top 4 role. Retaining Myers allows the team to grow their young right side and not have to rush either Jiricek/Nemec. Myers will have greater value after the 22/23 season when his $5M signing bonus is paid out, leaving the retaining team with a veteran on a $1M actual dollars and a $6M (or less on retention) cap-hit.

Overall:

The real benefit here is cap-flexibility for the roster. There are still some obvious warts in terms of contract value (Myers, OEL, Poolman and Pearson to a lesser extent) and some unknowns in young players like Attard and Bernard-Docker. The young RHD are waiver exempt, so if they are struggling, they can be sent to the AHL for more seasoning and replaced with an AHL vet / FA signing on the cheap.

There are a lot of unknowns up front; will Pettersson stay healthy and finally take the steps to be more than a PPG player? Can Boeser recover from a tough 21/22 season and offseason that saw him lose his father? Can Podkolzin continue to grow or will he have a tough Sophomore season like Hoglander did? Will Hoglander be better in the defensive end and get trusted with more minutes under a full season of Boudreau? Will the Kuzmenko signing pay dividends where he can be a PP1 contributor and regular 2nd line player or will the Canucks get the latest version of Vadim Shipachyov or Nikita Gusev?

I am sure that other fans will go on about how all these trades are unfair to their team and how certain players won't fit into their roster construction. Can't wait to read them. Flame away!

I think that JBD & the two 2nds are fair value for a player who produced at low-end 1st line level (52 pts, with only 3 total points on the PP) despite being moved up and down the lineup *and* is under team control for 4 more seasons at a very reasonable number ($4.95M AAV). The '22 TBL second is basically a 3rd. Anticipating a jump forward for OTT in 22/23 means that their own 2nd will not be in the top 40 picks, at which point, its basically a measure of what does your board say vs mine.

Ferland does nothing to help Vegas cap space. Just like having Weber does nothing to help Vegas cap. So you want Roy for nothing. Teams will offer Vegas something.

And there it is. Fans going to fan.

No, realistically JBD and a 2nd is fair value for Garland minimum

As a Canucks fan who very much thinks that Miller salary retained alone would be nice and that Chuck Fletcher is someone who could be taken advantage of (given he signed Rasmus Ristolainen to a multi-year deal), I believe that the Vancouver 1st would need to be included. The only other alternative, would be to retain the Vancouver 1st and offer up a cost-controlled player/players who would fit the mold of a Torts-style team OR to accept a non-palatable contract (like JVR) in return.

And the basis of the Weber was never about Vegas LTIR space. It was to get rid of 5m Dadanov(whatever)....That's where the cap saving was.
LTIR players can affect when a team will pay their bonus money....either in current year or the following. Since Vegas doesn't have bonuses payment, Weber is non factor for the Vegas cap.
But Montreal does and will have bonuses in 22/23. Without Weber they can pay all their bonuses in 22/23 without a carryover into 23/24....and that includes have Dadonov who likely gets traded at TDL

Well, as I see it, nobody really wants to help McCrimmon out at all. I think that it will be difficult (though not impossible) for Vegas to move on from Pacioretty and Martinez (given their injury history and age. I am just assuming LTI will allow for the team to retain their services and make another push - especially since you have hired a coach in Cassidy who will likely maximize the output from the team. I am not telling you anything you can't already see for yourself given the state of the team's cap. If Vegas wants to keep Hague, Howden, Kolesar and Roy, teams are going to try and take advantage. The alternative, I guess, is to offer sheet Roy and give Vegas a pick or two.

As I replied to the VGK fan - Teams will pay the absolute minimum possible to help out Vegas. Nobody wants to help McCrimmon out of the problem of his own making. Martinez and Pacioretty may have value in a trade to help the VGK avoid the use of Weber (and potentially Ferland's LTIR) but why then would the team reportedly resign 31yo Reilly Smith to a 3x$5M deal? The answer to me is a plan to run it all back with as much of the roster as possible and potentially use LTIR to do so. I don't see teams going the Offer Sheet route, as it is too unpredictable, but it is an option. I guess they could go back to the well and offer a draft pick up front in trade. But hey, this is a forum to offer ideas and I am a little biased to my team.

???? But obtaining Ferland or even Weber doesn't help Vegas with their cap. Don't know why you think it does. Now I agree Roy or any player traded might get minimal return as team won't want to help Vegas but also there are few teams to cap to obtain players without sending cap back to Vegas.

How does it not? Vegas can exceed the cap through the summer by a certain threshold. All it means to the best of my understanding is that by starting the season with a non-cap compliant lineup and using LTIR, Vegas does not accrue daily cap space through the season, but can pay out salary equivalent to the amount they exceed the cap starting day 1 of the regular season. So by extension, the Knights could pay their RFAs the amount that they are in excess of the cap and still field a competitive team. I agree its complicated, because the team cannot accrue space, that it may be possible (again) to dress a lineup of only 17 skaters (which sucks). I still think that Vegas will need to move out some money this offseason (in addition to the Dadonov move) because relying on LTIR (as they did all last season) is a crappy way to manage your lineup. Personally, I just like to watch the Knights suffer.

But teams can really only have a cap of 82.5m for "active players". Having Ferland and Weber does not allow Vegas an addiltional 12m or 94.5m for active players.
