Yeah, I get that, but he also cleared waivers in-season. My reasoning is that the Hawks are sitting on 20+ million in cap space with no goalies signed, and if they can get him for next to nothing and he plays okay you could flip him at the deadline. If not, well, I don't think the Hawks are really trying to win next year so they just ride it out. That said, if I had to add a sweetener to the deal I'd do it as long as it was reasonable.

Yeah, I get this too, but goaltending is voodoo and I don't know that one of Kuemper, Husso or Campbell at 5+ million doesn't hurt other parts of that roster. There also isn't anyone else in F/A who I think could be a starter, and trades for better goalies would cost more in terms of picks/prospects/roster players. It is a super risky gamble though, I totally admit that. I just wonder what a 23-year old with experience, term on his contract, and an up and down track record could do on this team?

Hawks have zero reason to pickup Mrazek with Lankinen and a developing Soderblom; Mrazek is not the type of guy to be a leader to young goalies. As far as flipping him, he's plagued with injuries, wildly inconsistent over his career, and only looked good playing behind the #1 defense at the time in Carolina. If he was on a $1.5M contract, fine, but nobody wants him for his cap hit. Leafs are going to have to at least include a 3rd or Abruzzese type of prospect to move him. Terrible signing by Dubas

I can't speak to what kind of leader Mrazek can be to a young goalie, and I doubt anyone but those in the game could. Also, I think "wildly inconsistent" describes most goalies in the league.

That said, The Blackhawks should have no thoughts of competing next year unless its for the lowest possible 1st round pick. If that was my team, I'd want to keep young, developing goalies away from that environment. Just my take on the situation.

I will 100% agree that he does get hurt a lot, and that this was a swing and a miss from Dubas. That said, I'd be happy to flip him with a 3rd or a mid-tier prospect to get a deal done.

That's what it is going to take because the Blackhawks have been clear that they will weaponize their cap space to gain picks and prospects. There is no sense in them doing any team favors. Hawks can pick up cheap goalies no problem, but it's all about planning for the future which means developing younger goalies, gaining picks and prospects.
