Draisaitl to Detroit AKA How to lose McDavid suggested trade by DSN

Description
Correction: Trade wasn't suggested by DSN but they analyzed the mock trade that was mentioned on a different site.

Just came across this mock trade that I found comical, not just because of the value or that they would be losing a top 5 player on a good contract but they will probably lose McDavid in 4 years assuming he doesn't request a trade if the team struggles within those 4 years. McDavid probably tries to force his way to Detroit after this season if they don't make it to the WCF again if this trade were to go down.

"Matthew Kendziuk of OctopusThrower.com that suggests the Red Wings trade for Edmonton Oilers star center, Leon Draisaitl."

" Here is Kendziuk’s rationale for both the Red Wings and the Oilers making this trade:
Why the Oilers Should Consider
While giving up a super star in the league, they have proven that they do not have the depth to be serious contenders. McDavid, Draisaitl, Nugent-Hopkins, and Nurse assume almost $35 million of the Oilers cap, preventing them from being able to sign quality depth options. With this trade they pick up three top-nine options, a capable puck-moving defenseman, and assets in the draft.

Why the Wings should Consider

They need a star forward and an elite level center. The trade gives the Wings flexibility to move Larkin to the wing or provide the captain better matchups. His experience of being “the man” over the past few seasons will allow him to be even more effective in his 200-foot game. Hronek is replaceable with prospects in the system, the draft, or free agency.

While Vrana is trade piece that the fans will miss, his ability and skillset will be enticing to the Oilers; you must give up something good to get something good. Veleno has a top six potential. It may be difficult to give up a prospect like Joey V but with the Wings having a high-end prospect pool; he is expendable."

I think if the Oilers consider this they better be getting Larkin, Vrana, Hronek, 2022 and 2023 (unprotected) 1sts

I know this isn't yours, but that return is nuts. Think the asking price on Drai starts at Raymond, 2022 1st, Vrana and would likely need more

Raymond would be nice but would lead to less pieces, and higher chance that the Oilers lose the trade and Holland his job. I think it would be easier to get more if they went for Larkin (plus they would need a center) and Detroit's 2023 1st unprotected. Can give them Barrie or Kassian to balance the cap.

When talking about a player the caliber of Draisaitl, I don't think a return of Larkin+Raymond+both firsts is out of the question. Maybe you can only swing one 1st at that point. Thinking about it more, think I for sure understated it in my previous message.

I'd think Edmonton would only intertain this if sieder is the starting piece as they could use some defensive help

Who knows, I know Raymond would be a non-starter for Yzerman but he is trying to get Draisaitl, so he would probably try giving less all around. I'm also thinking Hronek+Vrana could probably be extended for ~same as Raymond in 2-years (although Raymond would be an RFA) and the other two could walk. I think if Raymond was included they would want protection on the 2023 1st.

So, perhaps Draisaitl+Klefbom for Larkin+Raymond+ 2022 1st+ 2023 1st (top 5 protected).

I'm thinking Draisaitl+Klefbom+Barrie for Larkin+Vrana+Hronek+2022 1st + 2023 1st (unprotected)+ Zadina might be a better way to hit big, and that they would be more willing to do.

I thought Vrana's production was much higher than it actually is he hasn't really played much recently so not worth getting him, one of Seider or Raymond would have to be in there for sure but that's where a deal would fall apart.

Perhaps Draisaitl+Klefbom+Foegele for Larkin+Vrana+Veleno+Zadina+Hronek+ a goalie prospect (who isn't Cossa)+2022 1st+ 2023 1st (unprotected).

As much as i would love Leon Draisaitl, I'm not giving up the necessary pieces to acquire him. He'd be very expensive and start with Latkin++ at the very least.

Trading for Draisaitl would be way too expensive. He’d likely cost Seider + Vrana + Veleno + 2022 1st

This is nonsense from beginnnig to end. Rebuilding teams don't give up massive assets for one player, regardless of who he is. Detroit will use the #8 pick to get their centre and keep their assets.

I agree it is nonsense, however, Detroit is looking to start moving towards contention. Getting a 1C would be a big step in that direction, and they probably wouldn't get an NHL ready centre at 8th overall. So, I'm sure they would do Kendziuk's mock trade even though they are giving up 3 roster players in Vrana, Hronek, and Veleno who can all be replaced in free agency. Especially, with Vrana not playing much for Detroit/Wsh in the last two seasons due to injury.

That trade would be problematic for the Oilers though, who would be taking a step back. The only assets that they would certainly have control over for the duration of Draisaitl's contract is Veleno and whoever they would draft.

They could go sign Kadri for their 2C potentially but he probably won't come any cheaper than Draisaitl, and they could just try retaining Kane instead of having Vrana, and get a dman like Hronek in a trade or through development instead. Med- to long-term a move like this could cost them McDaniel too which would probably send them into a rebuild mode for years to come and cost Holland his job.
