Draft Day Moves

Description
Giving up a lot to get another top 5 pick but that's what it takes. MTL makes a huge splash via 3 team trade on draft day and selects one of RHD available.

Habs have addressed 3 glaring needs in one go....
1) cleared tons of future cap space (Andy + Dvo off the books plus 5 TDL UFA rental candidates next season)
2) secured their top two centers for next 10yrs
3) bolstered their RHD prospect pool and only sacrificing Mailloux (who realistically might be a player they never end up signing because of the bad PR from MTL media)

One thing not addressed here. If Habs end up with Wright/Cooley at 1 and Nemec/Jiricek at 2, they should hopefully send both back to juniors for another year. Habs would need to find a 1yr rental/replacement in FA to fill the C2 spot. Defense is fine for another year especially if Petry isn't moved.

My sources are telling me the islanders won’t give up pick 13, they are set on selecting one of Brad Lambert/Frank Nazar

Islanders trade aside, the Philly trade feels like too much of an overpay.

Basically 5th overall for 13th, 26th, Dvorak (27th + 2024 2nd Round Pick), and Mailloux (31st). You can get a good prospect at 13th overall and keep the rest of those assets or use them in a better deal.

Would love to get Nemec, and you're right it will cost a lot but that's too much for me.

Edit:
For comparison I wanted to see what the draft pick value works out to, reference https://www.google.com/amp/s/soundofhockey.com/2022/06/06/examining-the-value-of-nhl-draft-picks/amp/

5th = 484

13th = 310
26th = 175
Dvorak (27th + 2nd Round) = 203
Mailloux (31st) = 139

TOTAL = 827

Not sure how good this chart is but it should give you an idea of how much of an overpay this is. You could probably take out one of Dvorak, Mailloux, or 26th overall and still get it done.

Totally agree that this feels like an overpay but I don't see a reason for Philly to trade out of that spot unless they significantly improve next season. DVO adds needed center depth and trading JVR opens up 2.5m for them to go after another FA. I think it would be realistic to offer this trade without Mailloux or 26 initially but it might be necessary to eventually include it to tip the needle. There really isn't any precedent for this type of trade so it's a shot in the dark.

I have a feeling Nemec might be gone before 5 we will see, but I wonder if one of Nemec or Jiricek might be available at 7th overall? Ottawa has gone on record saying they would move the pick so maybe they are a better trading partner than Philly.
