Off season moves

Description
Edmonton trade happens if the Oilers move out Barrie. They get a cheaper RD in Holl with one less year and a replacement for Kassian in Simmonds for much less. If you want to be "that" GM, Campbell's rights can be tossed in as well. The Leafs get a young , big frame player with a knack for scoring (just has to work on consistency). If Bunting can wrack up the points he did, I'm sure Pool Party will do just fine.

Ottawa is looking to showcase they are ready to take things to the next level and compete for a playoff spot again (see Debrincat trade). They also have cap space and a desire to give up Murray. While not the best goalie, Toronto does have a fantastic medical team and I wouldn't be surprised to see Murray rebound in a reduced role for the first year. Forementon is a very speedy winger who plays hard and has a high compete level. Basically a replacement for Mickey only with more offensive upside. AND the Leafs get some decent picks to work with in case Dubas makes more terrible signings. Sens get Nylander who is very skilled and will fit in well with the Sens other young players and their styles.

With the signing of Husso, it's looking like Detroit are in the same boat as the Sens. Muzzin agrees to waive for this reason and provides mentorship for the Wings younger players. It's a low risk higher reward for Yzerman and the Leafs shed some salary.

Talbot isn't happy having to split his role currently. Unsure if the value is there from the Leafs perspective, but if it's ballpark I think it's worth pulling the trigger on for one year. Gives Woll and Kallgren another year to further develop their game. Talbot goes to another competitive team and gets starting role back.

Dallas trade may be a stretch. I've personally always liked Hakpana's size and physical play as well as salary hit. Really it's an inexpensive trade that gives Duzzak his request of being traded and some other prospects a fresh start. It could be to anyone for a mire physical DMan to split up games with Lily or fill in for injuries. Other option is to let Rubins be 7th man (Also like his size and play last year).

For what Marchement brings to the table 3.5M can be matched, so I added term and made it 5 years hoping that would seal the deal. His energy and even offensive output would be a welcomed sight on the Leafs team .

EDM is only going to trade Barrie if they get an upgrade, someone like Weegar. Oilers already freed up a lot of cap space and Ryan Rishaug mentioned that there is a strong chance that Barrie remains an Oiler. So, that's a no to Holl.

With Keith retiring someone mentioned they would be keeping Barrie.

And yet Leafs fans persist in thinking that we'll take his full cap hit (never mind the current cap structure of our roster) and send them back a valuable player like Trevor Moore or Matt Roy.

Muzzin isn't as bad as people portray him. He's slipped a bit I will admit (I blame it on being more cautious from his concussions) but he's still a solid 4th DMan on most teams who can handle tough minutes and would do just fine with a speedier or younger partner. Salary cap wise his contract isn't the best (still better than say McDonough's) but actual salary he isn't owed as much due to the structure. So teams with cap space can technically (if my understanding is right) can pay little for him.
I don't think the Leafs will or should have to pay to give him up. If they can move Mzarek and only drop 13 spots in the draft then I think Muzzin can find a new home. If not this year than next (and hopefully Sandin signs a one year deal and understands he's getting his shot soon). Muzzin still has a hard point shot that the Leafs have never utilized. Should have been on the second powerplay for this reason but they have other ideas. He also still hits hard too!

Sens want to get better. They have the cap space, can extend Nylander next season if they want, and Nylander is still young to be a part of their core. DJ Smith is familiar with him and he'll get top line or second line minutes every night instead of his current situation of up and down between second and third.

Leafs get what they need out ofnit: cap relief, draft picks, back up goalie with experience, and a Mikheyev replacement that's younger and RFA. Plus personally since I believe Nylander is soft, Leafs shouldn't have trouble playing against him.

I’ll keep the ppg game breaker (albeit sometimes soft) on a value deal.,Leafs need cap space - like most contenders - but trading Willy for questionable goalie on a big ticket + futures (I like Formenton) ain’t the solution. no thanks.

I am NOT one of those people who portray Muzzin as "bad." My SOLE objection to any trade back to Los Angeles is the economic unfeasibility and lack of fit. He doesn't match our compete window, our youth plan or our defense strategy. And he's not worth giving up one of our prime developing assets for, even though he might be an acceptable #2 LD for us.

In what universe does taking on 2 years of Muzzin's contract get you a 2nd round pick? You're going to have to include one to get that done.

What in the world are you talking about? I've never said anything anywhere, let alone in this thread, that implies that I think that we should get a second-round draft pick for taking on Muzzin's cap hit.

Read it again. Leaf's in this scenario would be getting a 2ND from the Wings. Leafs would have to include a 2nd to take on that contract. Not the other way around

The 2nd is conditional. If he remains healthy he's a solid D Man and worth the 2nd. If he gets bit with the injury bug again and fails to play in 70 games the deal is a 4th and 7th. That's still a good deal for what you're getting out of him. Not sure why the Leafs would have to give up a pick to trade a good dman

My only prior trade of Muzzin back to LA was thinking he'd waive to go back and be one of those Disney reunions. I know Moore had a great year last year but is he consistent enough to maintain the pace? (I do miss his energy).

Remember that his "great year" only started on January 1 when he was put with Danault and Arvidsson. That line was one of the best statistically in the entire NHL from that point on. We're cautiously optimistic that they can continue to produce together. And now the first line being Kempe - Kopitar - Fiala should improve the entire offense dramatically. Then we have the kids (Kupari - Byfield - Kaliyev and Grundstrom and Vilardi with Energizer Bunny Lizotte) and the team is starting to look like a serious contender for the playoffs. We're hopeful!
