Burns is worth a hell of a lot more than that, especially if there is half retention.

I unfortunately disagree just based off his age and contract length

But there isn't a cap retention though. He's 37 and got 3 more years left. Sharks win this trade.

Edit: but if there is a 50% cap retention I don't see why Sharks would trade him, unless it was for a 1st++

For a RHD who is a giant, can play in all situations, and can consistently put up about 40-50 points on a not so good Sharks team, especially if 4 mil gets retained whether just by SJ or by SJ and another team, he is worth a lot more than 2 3rd rounders despite his age and contract. Not to mention, he still plays about 20 minutes per game. Worst case scenario, he retires after 1 year, which at that point Morrow is very likely ready to be brought up. And if he retires after a year or 2, I’m pretty sure his contract either just disappears from the cap hit or is essentially like an LTIR loophole contract. Not exactly sure about that, but the Canes could stand to win big particularly if Burns ends up retiring during his contract.

I wouldn’t give anything too crazy for Burns, but at the very least, a 2nd and a solid prospect or 2 should get it done.

Maybe something like Gardiner, Suzuki, Honka, and a 2nd for Burns (total retention 4mil, doesn’t matter how it happens) would work. Gardiner is purely for cap reasons.

That’s terrible for San Jose. Giving up a 50 point defenseman while retaining $12 mil for two late 3rds? Try more like a 2nd and two prospects.
