DET 2022-2023 - Post Day 1 FA

Created by: TMarch
Team: 2022-23 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 14, 2022
Published: Jul. 14, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
This is how I think they'll start the season, they definitely won't end it this way.

All contracts DET has are buriable. So a guy like Erne could get sent to GR, plenty of money to eat 1.050M. At some point, someone will need to go to get Fabbri back into the lineup. Don't think he'll be ready to start the season, but by Christmas, he should be.

Zadina will have another Czech on his wing (either Vrana or Kubs). Hopefully that keeps his game up.

I think Veleno is the 4th best C on this team (with further development he should pass Suter), but he shouldn't be playing on the 4th line, that's not his game. I'd rather have him in GR than playing 10 minutes/night. He also doesn't bring the size/net front presence of Rass for the PP.

Berggren should earn his way into the lineup this year, but not right away (see Nyquist as an example) unless he has a development pause a la Zadina did in GR. GR depth is much better now than it was when Zadina was down there, and Berggren is older.

On D, Edvinsson is a moderate ? Unlike Seider, who had AHL time before going to the SHL, Edvinsson doesn't have any smaller ice experience outside of World Juniors. I think he makes it, but it wouldn't be a shocker if he starts in GR as well.

Goalies play 50/50 to start, then Lalonde rides the hot hand.

I think switching Maatta and Edvinsson would be wise defensively.

I also think Zadina gets a 1yr deal because it males him more attractive at the TDL.

These are all very reasonable takes and I could see you being right on all of them.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised to see Edvinsson start and spend most of the year in GR, especially after what Yzerman added on the left side. I think it'll probably take 2 LD injuries to get him up and my reasoning for that is the same as your reasoning for Veleno in GR. Might as well let him by The Guy™ in GR vs giving him a partner that can't cover his mistakes defensively in the NHL.

I also think Veleno can play the 4th line role in the NHL and I think he's proven to be able to do what Erne does but do it better, so I think he starts in the NHL. Veleno over Erne also gives that line a legitimate chance to score goals. I wouldn't be surprised to see Veleno as the 4C and move Rasmussen to the wing.

It's going to take some serious injury trouble to get Berggren to the NHL at this point. He's probably ready, but we're talking about at least 2 more top 9 injuries/traded players on top of Fabbri before I see him making the team. I'm not sure we see that before the deadline, if at all.

My last nitpick is carrying 3 healthy scratches on D and 0 forwards. Doubt that happens.

Very interesting day for sure. Lots of players and rookies to watch as the season unfolds. So much better than 2-3 years ago when this team was totally unwatchable.
