I didn't see toews play last year, does he have anything left? Seems there are likely better options

With his salary you've left no room to make additions unless you trade an active player

He’s still a solid 2nd line center. Would accomplish more next to big talent and his last chance at a cup. Wore 19 because of Sakic. I also like that Entwistle kid. He would fit Colorado’s system well.

Toews is not a 2C any longer and is not worth a 1st

I like Toews but he's coming off his two worst goal-scoring seasons and his worst offensive season, granted Chicago was a very poor team. He's also 34 and will be 35 come playoff time, would still cost the Avs $5mm+ and a solid player in JT and a fist-round pick. I think there are better options still available to the Avs. Now, if we're talking about Kane.....

Toews is coming off of missing a season the year before last with long covid. He improved quite a bit as the season wore on. Keep in mind the year prior to long covid he had one of his best seasons. That said, Toews is stout faceoff guy, 2 way power center and one of the best defensively. He was never really know to be a super high goal scorer or point produce, more of a great all around player in his day. If you look at his first few years in the league where he did score more, most of those goals were in the dirty area in front of the net. That said, no need to move a 1st, make it a 2nd and wait 25% into the season when his cap drops further due to proration.

Regarding Kane, this package certainly wouldn't land Kane, but i'm sure you are aware of that

With regards to the cap space...another team can retain an additional 50%. Since Toews' signing bonus was paid out on July 1st...the 3rd party team would only need to pay $725k for a $2,625,000 cap hit. I mean...Seems like BUF quite frankly should do that if they're looking for a pick/prospect.

I could definitely see COL making this trade. HECK, I could see Sakic trying to make a 3-way deal with AZ (as a place holder) for BOTH Kane and Toews. Kane and Toews are only owed $2.9M this year. Hawks retain 50%...aka...$1.45M and a 3rd party retain another 50% means $725k. That's not a lot of money at all.
