Chicago what do you think

Description
Okay so, Chicago does a cap load up this year to save some cap next year.

It would paying 6.5 million in cap this season to save 2.5 million in cap next season.

Why would Chicago do this?

The 2023 UFA class should be pretty large and money is going to be really tight again, if the cap only goes up 1 million. One of the biggest pools of money available could be Chicago. They could also gain a ton of assets by taking on bad contracts with the expected 41 million in cap space instead of dipping into UFA. Chicago takes on more cap this year and trades for a 1 year bad deal to save money in next year's cap. Johnson at 2.5 mil is more palatable for the Canes, they get 1.5 million in cap relief. and they get a RH FO draw guy. On the 4th line it isnt a bad gig as he can provide leadership for Drury and jump on the ice to take big draws in the right dot. Honestly a 2.5 million TJ would be easily to move next off-season if need be. The risk should be low for us. If need be we could bury him in Chicago (AHL) if he really was a drag on the team to save another 1.1 million in cap space.

We might add on something like Bear or Suzuki to make it work but I dont think it is really necessary.

I have to imagine Chicago are on Jake's M-NTC right now.

Doubtful considering, he needed to submit that list on July 1st and none of the trades happened until July 7th. He wouldn't know KD was tearing it down all the way. Also, it's only 7 teams...so I tend to think guys pick places that they don't like to live in when it's such a short list.

I really dont think Chicago is going for any big free agents any time soon. I would think they would have to have some sweetener to take on salary plus retaining on Johnson.

The Hawks have been pretty clear they want picks. Doubt Bear interests them because he just blocks the pipeline of D prospects that need ice time. Also, Suzuki definitely doesn't interest them. He means more to CAR than any other team. Once the production comes back, THEN at that point other teams might have interest, but until then it's the permanent blind spot that other GMs are going to point to as something to undercut his value.

I dont know that one is required here as Johnson isnt a contract that gets them over the cap basement or a value contract (low money and high cap hit). Johnson is well under value at 5 million too. Its just a cap shuffle for both teams that benefit from such.

I think it's more that the Hawks are using one of their retention. You only get 3 a year. They will need those for Toews and Kane and then potentially a Domi or AA 50%

true, but outside of those 2 who else do they have that will need retains? They could be the 3rd wheel in a trade at the deadline to retain a tiny amount of cap but we are talking about a very little as far as return.

You say NEEDS retained, but it might just be wants to retain. AA got two 2nds not that long ago. I think they're keep 2 reserved for Toews/Kane and then whomever plays better between Domi/AA will get the other. Plus, that retention goes away at the end of the year.

I 100% see the cap swap you're talking about. I just don't see the Hawks really needing it. If they can get more teams involved to bidding for Domi/AA and more/better picks. That's what they should be doing. I guess another way to look at it is...if it's that easy to find a 3rd team to take cap...then CAR should 100% be exploring that. I see the value of this to CAR for sure. That other team likely wont have the Toews/Kane players that 100% required retention.
