Wheeler

Created by: Feelers4Ehlers
Team: 2022-23 Winnipeg Jets
Initial Creation Date: Jul. 25, 2022
Published: Jul. 25, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Devils need a RH winger. Wheeler can still produce on the power play and can give a leadership to a young group of players. Also NJD have the cap space to take his whole contract. The right side for NJD is stacked with the addition of Marino. Hamilton is going to be hard to move with the NMC. Severson is the odd man out. As a sweetener the Jets include a great LHD prospect in Heinola. From the sample size that we have seen he is a NHL ready defenseman that can move the puck really well and has great vision. Jets obviously don't want to part with him but need help on the right side and are pretty loaded on the left side. Also including Stanley who has NHL games is a big body and the NHL loves the tall, young defensemen.

Devils decline, they don't have the cap room either (understand we have to sign Bratt)

That's a fair point.

This illustrates that the Jets desire to only move Wheeler without salary retention means that he will be with the Jets this season. The teams that could afford to take on his full salary are places that he wouldn't waive for.

If the Devils would send another player with a higher cap hit (tatar? Andreas Johnsson?) does it make the trade more possible? I did this because someone already mentioned is the Jets don't want to retain salary with Wheeler. NJD have the space and the need for a guy like Wheeler.

I think Dillion would be a great fit for the Oilers. Paired up with Bouchard or Barrie would be perfect. Also with the cap hit of Dillion is great for Edmonton. I think Dillion would be less than what Pulijarvi will come in at. Also anything as a return for Pulijarvi is a win for Edmonton, especially on defense.

I think the issue might be that no teams want Wheeler whether the Jets retain on him or not.
