Description
What do you guys think is going on?

I’m starting to think POJ is the odd man out. Before a sophomore slump last year, smith was projecting to be a star. Here are some stats to support that.

https://twitter.com/byronmbader/status/1353534651202117633?s=21&t=AddwSGOwk8a7sVzi5lY5rw

https://twitter.com/byronmbader/status/1548451481501634564?s=21&t=AddwSGOwk8a7sVzi5lY5rw

I am coming around to the idea that the NHL is the place where smith should be. And this is where management might be as well. Why would they trade Marino for smith just to let smith go to the ahl? At this point, you probably can’t move pettersson or Dumo either. That would mean playing both smith and POJ which would be risky.

I am really liking the petry addition in hindsight. I was pretty shocked at first and was worried but I am excited to watch him play. Poehling too - hopefully sully can make him reach his potential.

So I ask you: what are your thoughts on the moves that have been made, and the moves which may be still to come?

I unfortunately agree. Our current management do not have as much loyalty to POJ as our previous management. Although I would much rather move Dumo, I think POJ is the odd man out. 2 options I can see are Pens using 2 dmen (POJ + Dumo) to upgrade on D. I have been using them 2 in a Chychrun trade. Another option would be to use POJ + a forward to upgrade at forward. Maybe POJ + Kapanen for someone slightly cheaper who would be an upgrade for us.

I really thought POJ played super well with Letang a couple years back for those couple of games, but I guess they arent ready to trust POJ and Smith on the left side.

Yeah I think POJ + Dumoulin + any propsect not named Pickering + 1st rounder for chychrun makes a lot of sense

Or current forward + POJ + mid round pick for a top 6 forward

The Heinen signing has me thinking that Zucker is more expendable now but finding a team take on that contract is another story.

A lot of these RFA contracts and arbitrations need to get figured out and I hope after that, teams will then evaluate their roster makeup once more and the trade market will open up. Otherwise, I see it being a very quiet August. Hextall probably doesn't make a move again until around training camp at the end of September where he trades a depth defenseman such as Joseph or Ruhwedel for a mid round draft pick.

The way I see it the Marino trade was just a cap dump. I wouldn't put too much weight on them bringing in Smith and don't thing they would be against a year in the AHL for him.

As for the moves - the signings before UFA were well done. As was getting Heinen back at 1mil. Qualifying Kapanen was a huge mistake - as was the contract. And the Rutta signing was awful. The Marino trade was a fine return for a cap dump - although I would've liked him to be moved for a middle six forward. The Petry trade was fine in a vacuum, but I don't like it considering the Rutta signing.

I don’t get the problem with the ruuta signing or the problem with a stacked RD

It's a complete waste of 2.75mil. If he was the 2nd RHD it would be fine. There was no need to spend money on a 3rd RHD - Ruhwedel was good last year. It just added to the log jam issue on defense when forward depth was obviously needed

You can spend 3 mil on a forward and 800k on a dman, or 800k on a dman and 3mil on a forward. Just like signing ruuta and letting O’Connor play the 4th line vs not signing ruuta and letting Ruhwedel play the bottom pair, then spending that 3 mil on a forward. Tomato tomato if you ask me.

At least this way, we will get a bit stronger on the back end physically and not get pushed around in front of our own net which was a problem last year.

The 800K Dman was already signed and on the team though - and proved to be a great 3rd pairing Dman. So why sign another 3rd pair Dman? It's just a waste of money. So you're spending 2.75mil just because a guy weighs 13 pounds more? Plus Rutta isn't even physical - Ruhwedel had 56 more hits than Rutta in 2 more games.

I wouldn't call it tomato tomato because there was no need for the 3rd pairing dman - but a huge need for bottom 6 forward help. Plus you technically don't need to sign a forward for 3mil or under. You can combine that with other money to get a better player. Sure they could have made a push for Domi or Athansiou with Rutta's money alone, but add Heinen's money and now you have a shot at Niederreiter - add Kapanen's money and now you can go after Trocheck or Copp or a number of other players. I just don't understand the point of going and spending 2.75mil on a 3rd pair RHD when that position wasn't even remotely an issue - but forward clearly was a need.

I think 1-2 more moves are coming. Most likely smaller. I feel pretty good about the team, definitely better than I did going into last season. The only part I don't love is the second line with Zucker, just because him and Malkin have had no chemistry in the past. I feel like we have 5/6 really good top wingers. I would honestly put Kapanen on the 2nd line, drip or drown for him and if he dosen't do well there try and move him at the deadline. Overall though, love the D, just feel the forwards need some adjustments. I could see Blueger traded for cap and a pick. Also could see Rodrigues being re-signed. I would feel super super confident about this team if we could get someone like Milano as well. Overall though, I feel good, every team has weaknesses and we can adress some throughout the season and before TDL.
