Smallish moves

Created by: Hammerwise
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 10, 2022
Published: Aug. 18, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
IMO, the Leafs have a window to make some noise in the next 2 years, just to retain Matthews, Nylander, Marner, etc... and Leafs are probably forced to lose Kerfoot in any case to get under the cap.

Bringing in two young guys in Vilardi and Valimaki helps now and moving forward, along with robertson making the squad and maybe he and Jarnkrot can get some offense from that 3rd line. Brooks is a better 4C option than Gaudette (who might play 4RW), and this solidifies the team if Steeves is not ready.

1.9mil for Sandin is a bit of a hope....but ultimately you're dealing two similar age/draft pick guys, both who have huge upside, but not there yet.
1 for 1 because ultimately Sandin is unsigned

Value wise these are quite reasonable trades. Fit wise I just don't see it. Also I don't think the Leafs are a better team after the moves.

Why do all TOR fans think CGY fans have some sort of interest in Kerfoot?

At 1.9 for Sandin LA can't get under the cap with Anderson and Durzi still to sign.

Well, considering they probably lose Kerfoot for very little (smallish market because of cap/NTC/etc....) getting a 23 yr old dman in Valinmaki back is nice value.

Vilardi (with 37 pts in 89 games in NHL) on a pretty defensive and usually a non-playoff team at less than 1 mil is pretty close in value to an unsigned Sandin. Both have promise.

Holl for Braun is a lateral move, but it saves TOR 1mil in cap space. Both are pretty meh, but Braun is coming off a solid year/Holl is not. Pretty even, but with the cap savings and nice 12th-14th forward in Brooks, it cost the 3rd. TOR is not strong at center with Steeves, SDA and other center options not quite there yet.

Without the salary constraints, Kerfoot/Holl and Sandin are better than Vilardi/Braun/Brooks and Valimaki, but with the team needing to meet the cap, these moves leave them with more youth and a deeper team

Yes, LA cant afford and PHI or CGY might not have interest, but I think value wise theyre not bad

I agree completely with @DrDinkiee and @Riley816 (no surprise, the three of us are usually on the same page): all of your trades are completely realistic as to value; the issue is one of fit. Los Angeles essentially has no cap space right now, so whatever Sandin is going to sign for, if it's more than Vilardi's minimal cap hit, it requires another move (probably trading Sean Walker). And then there's the minor annoyance of our having four LhD's already and Jakob Moverare being non-waivers-exempt.

I would trade Sean Walker for Sandin, or accept the burden of a further roster move if the deal were Moverare plus a second for Sandin, but I don't see anything comfortable beyond that formulation.
