Why would the Devils trade for Toews in the first place if they weren't competitive?

Because they're not, They're not going anywhere with that Goaltending. They need more than Blackwood and Vanecek to make the playoffs.

The Capitals made the playoffs with Samsonov and Vanecek, Andrew Hammond once received Vezina and Hart votes, and the Devils' last playoff berth was on the backs of Keith Kinkaid and injured Corey Schneider. Don't count them out before the season starts
