Why not make these trades Sabres sneak into the playoffs if Bruins or Caps slip

Created by: gretzkyghosts
Team: 2022-23 Buffalo Sabres
Initial Creation Date: Aug. 31, 2022
Published: Sep. 1, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The lines could be different, Granato will put together the best combination, this lineup is obviously open to discussion:

Keep the top line together.
Skinner pre Tuch 30 games 9 goals, 8 assists, 17 pts; post Tuch 50 games 24 goals, 22 assists, 46 pts.
Thompson pre Tuch 27 games 10 goals, 8 assists, 18 pts; post Tuck 48 games 28 goals, 22 assists, 50 pts.

Mittelstadt was paired with Olofsson about 25% of the time, Hinostroza on the same line should give Buffalo more balanced scoring.
After his wrist healed, over Olofsson's final 34 games he had 15 goals, 13 assists, 28 pts and was +1.
Projected to 36 goals over and game 82 season
BTW Out of his 20 goals only 7 were PP.

Asplund with Krebs should help to erase some of Payton’s defensive errors. Playing Quinn on the third line could relieve the pressure of having to produce.

Cozens on the fourth line should help Zemgus and Kyle score more while providing additional physical play to the shut down line.
Optimistic scoring but not impossible:

90 Skinner-Thompson-Tuch 33-33-24
62 Olofsson-Mittelstadt-Hinostroza 25-20-17
41 Asplund-Krebs-Quinn 8-15-18

I like Granato a lot and I like what Buffalo is doing but they finished 25 points behind the Caps and 32 behind the Bruins last year. Even if they both drop by 10 or so points, which is quite a lot especially for the caps who have made serious upgrades in goal, Buffalo needs to win at least 7 more games than last year to pass them in the standings and hope that OTT, NJD, CBJ, NYI don't all improve as well. Once again I like a lot of what they have done this offseason, but they are running back pretty much the same roster + power -- 50 more GF and 50 less GA just from internal development is a massive step to take.

I don't think you are wrong, but there is a chance you could be. It's not just power, these are some other guys that really only played the second half of last season (or less)- Krebs, tuch, Quinn, peterka, lybushkin, Samuelsson, and comrie. We barely had ahl goaltending when Anderson was hurt too. Plus olofsson played hurt and did absolutely nothing until his injury healed, then he finished the season with 20.
The reasons you could be right- our division is a buzz saw, comrie/anderson/upl is still probably in the bottom 1/4 of the league in goal, we are going to be relying on a lot of kids (talented sure, but still kids). Also, our coach is very well liked by the players and fans, he has the players playing loose and producing offense, defense is still a work in progress, and there's always questions if you get crushed until the are out of it, then guys start performing when the pressure is off.
Should be a fun season regardless, the Sabres haven't added as much as Ottawa, but they have added a lot. Maybe savoie gets his 10 games too

Too much expected in terms of growth. Expect us to score 20-25 more goals than last year, and that's mostly going to be coming from Quinn and hopefully healthy Olofsson and Mitts. We will not contend for playoffs unless our entire team (especially goaltending) has career seasons. Our time is coming, but we need to have developed the young players right before we have a real shot at the postseason

Yea totally forgot that guys like tuch were out most of the season. I definitely am optimistic about the team and have a soft spot for buffalo and their fans so really hope the year does go well, but I think people need to slightly temper their expectations for BUF, OTT, NJD, CBJ, and DET in the east. They all added a lot and should definitely be better, but there is still a big big gap to make up.

    Thank you for your comments.
I completely agree that playoffs is a bridge too far.
I added some additional information projecting last year's production to 82 games.
Reducing the GA by 47 appears to be within reach, while scoring an additional 56 may be a stretch, adding 36 goals may be more reasonable.
Let me add, with a healthy team, over the last 28 games the Sabres were 16-9-3 for 35 or 103 projected over 82 games.
Adding Comrie, Lyubushkin, Quinn, Holl, Foegele (my trades) and Power ( for a full season) maybe the Sabres can grab the brass ring and make the playoffs.
