Everybody in the world wants to see a Roussel - MacEwen - Deslauriers line... please don't deprive us of this. I don't know why you'd pay Staal that much when he's on a PTO in FLA anyway... didn't even play last year? It'd be a hell of an opportunity for Frost to play 2C

Because the Flyers can. With Ellis on LTIR they can replace his full salary prior to the season starting. If they don't replace his full salary, they only receive a LTIR credit in the amount needed to become cap compliant. It would be best if the Flyers used his full salary to become cap compliant even if it means overpaying Staal.

You'd pay a guy on a PTO that didn't pay last year nearly 4million dollars just because you can? There's just got to be better options out there... a team like MTL has like 6 guys that play center. The logic doesn't even work considering Coots is also going to LTIR... I guess you might as well pay Loui Erickson 7million to reap those LTIR rewards....!

Well I figure the Flyers will probably have to entice Eric Staal to play here instead of a cheap deal in Florida. Considering he can still likely score 20+ goals, the 1 year deal is fine. The logic is not the same for Couturier. In his case the Flyers will have him on regular IR when the season starts. This means he will count towards the cap and the Flyers can move him to LTIR afterward getting his full salary cap number to play with if they choose to do so. I only messed with Ellis' cap number because #1 he's expected out all season. #2 the Flyers are already over the cap so they might as well spend his full number to bring in some help. The timing of when a player goes on LTIR matters and that's all I'm trying to show here. The more likely option from the Flyers is that they waive players and present a minimum roster to be cap compliant with Couturier and Ellis both on regular IR. The next day the Flyers then will place Ellis and Couturier on LTIR and receive full cap space credit for both players.
