deadline with depth

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2022-23 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 16, 2022
Published: Oct. 16, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Cap would require one LTIR injury to work.

This is assuming Vancouver is out of the playoff race.

Horvat would be a great upgrade over Kerfoot. Schenn would be good defensive depth.

Van gets a high end RD prospect and a 1st.

Thoughts?

I would pay it to be honest. Horvat is a captain, in his prime, great 2 way centre. Plus Schenn would be a great depth piece.

I think this would be the price. If the Leafs can get a pick back (like a 3rd back), then so be it. But I would do this for sure.

Van may still be in the playoff hunt though. I think if Horvat doesn't have an extension by then, they should trade him.

3rd line has been our best so far this year. Big over pay for Horvat and a guy who would be our 10th Dman. Try for a 2C and move JT to the wing for that price.

Horvat is a number 2 C. He is a very reliable 2 way centre. Put him there and put JT on the wing if you want then. Having a number 2 C as your #3 isn't a bad call going into the playoffs. And Schenn would be our 8th best. Not 10th. He is probably worth a 3rd.

I would get the same results putting Kerfoot at 2C. Why waste the assets?

Horvat is clearly an upgrade over Kerfoot. Kerfoot is a solid player. Horvat is a better player. Basically in every sense.

If Vancouver is out of the playoff race and they don't have Horvat signed to an extension, I think this would be a fair deal.

As you stated he is a reliable 2 way C which = Not fast or skilled enough for the top 6. I'm from London and saw him in junior. He simply is not worth the price. Reliable 2 way C means not good enough!!

I just don't really get it. Kerfoot has been fine this year. Why trade a 1st and a top defensemen prospect to barely improve. I mean is Horvat better defensively by a bit yes, is he a lot better at draws yes, but other than that he doesn't really give us anything more than what we have with Kerfoot. Think about it, Kerfoot had 1 less point with 18 less powerplay points. If you say well Horvat will get powerplay points with the leafs, in the playoffs he's barely going to play since PP1 controls almost all of the time. I feel like the leafs are perfectly fine right to sit back because the only players I can see the leafs acquiring at the deadline who are significant improvements are Kane (controls his own destiny), Klingberg and Severson (both defensemen are going to get at least a 1st and a 2nd which doesn't seem worth it since Holl isn't that much of a downgrade. Maybe a goalie, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.

I think the canucks need to sweeten the deal a bit, but yeah, a good idea for both teams.
