Yeah.

How many teams have ever retained 50% on a fair to good value contract with three years of term on it?

Ottawa wouldn't trade Pinto anyway.

Pinto = automatic decline (same for Greig)

Ottawa has Chabot, Zub and now Sanderson joining the team and adding a lot to the defense. But not only that, Brannstrom is breaking out and looks fantastic so far.

Then there's several good young projects like JBD, Kleven, Thomson, Hamara, Nordberg, etc.

Holden and Hamonic are not awful 3rd pairing stop gaps.

The need for Chychrun is shrinking by the day, Sens have the luxury to "wait it out"

Counter :

Zaitsev, Nikita
Thomson, Lassi
Sokolov, Egor

Yotes need to make cap floor. only way they can do it is to retain, Pinto is good but the sens have a log jam forming at F and everyone else is extended. it makes sense for Ottawa cause they need the D help and paying a top 4 man 2.25m for 3 years is a great deal. Arizona wants to suck and get young players, If retaining helps both those goals, they would do it

My thought on it was. The sens top 6 for the next 4 years is set. Especially at C making a luxury. unless you want to waist his potential playing as a 3C. Move him when his value is high

They paid a 1st for Nick foligno and gave up a first for their backup to play on a different team. They would pay this for a guy who would have been 2nd in leaf's D scoring last season

Nick Foligno was a defensive forward who could score and provide depth. They over paid for him (and he got immediately hurt) but it was still a need.
They didnt give up a 1st to move Mrazek, they moved back in the draft like 10 spots or whatever to move mrazek, and they did that because they needed cap space and he was hurt all the time.
They would not trade it for a guy they simply do not need because they dont need defencemen at all.

Dubas has since made it clear that he's not spending a first on rentals

ok you have the right to have your own ideas but that's clearly not the Sens plan with Pinto. Norris is signed for 8 years and Stutzle for 9 years. These 3 guys will be here for the foreseeable future

Retaining is the only way they can hit the cap floor??..

Sorry but the "hitting the cap floor" narrative is one of the dumbest ones on here, they can sign some guys or take someone's LTIR problem for free or take back a UFA to make the cap floor.

Theres a multitude of ways to hit the cap floor that doesn't involve retaining 50% for three seasons on Chycrun.
