That’s a big No(ah) to this trade. Hanafin and a 1st? Hawks don’t need him and Kane won’t waive this early.

I beg to differ. Having a legit defensive partner for Jones would be a good thing. There are two possible outcomes that come to mind: 1. It keeps Jones happy, playing well, and productive. And/or 2. It makes Jones look a whole lot more valuable for when he inevitably asks for a trade.

And personally, I would love to have Hanafin in CHI long term. He is the perfect age to fit the rebuild timeline and he is the type of player that is probably going to have a long and successful career in the NHL.

Hawks can't trade Kane for defense. They have like 3 forward prospects that are worth anything. They need to get a solid forward prospect and a first for kane. Hanifin fits the rebuild as much as debrincat and dach did.. Can't see it happening. Plus if hanifin is such a solid defenseman no playoff team would be willing to trade him for a rental.

I can't see it happening either. I doubt CGY moves Hanifin before the season is over, if at all. What I am saying is I can see benefits to a trade involving Hanifin, and the value is there. I really don't think they "need" to get a forward prospect, but it would definitely be nice. LHD is certainly a position we have WAY TOO MUCH OF, but we also don't have any legitimate top pairing LHD. Korchinski could be eventually, but he is an offensive minded defenseman, so playing him with Jones in the future will probably be a big no no. Everyone else in our pipeline is most likely 2nd pairing material at best. Also, Hanifin not only increases Jones value by giving him a legitimate partner, but Hanifin has value of his own that could possibly bring in another prospect and/or a 1st.

Also, CGY needs some offense and has Mackey waiting in the AHL and Weegar capable of jumping right into their top pairing.

I disagree with my fellow hawks fans here. This is big time value for Kane, and Hanafin is only 25. If we want to contend in 4-5 years, having vets like Hanafin and Jones still in their prime to support to rookies would be huge. A future blue line looking something like this would be elite:

Hanafin-Jones
Korchinski-Murphy
Vlasic-Regula

TBD: Rinzel, Allan, Mitchell
Long shots: Phillips, Roos, Galvas
Bust: Beaudan

I see where you're coming from but I think it's too soon to acquire those kind of pieces. Hanifin makes the team better immediately. He wouldn't affect this season too much but the next two seasons he would improve our record which gives us a worse draft pick. I think it's a smarter move to trade Kane for pure futures and cap dumps just to ensure a few seasons of top 5 draft picks. Even if they get lucky and get Bedard, they're still a few high end talents away from being any good. It's just too soon for this type of move.

Yeah, maybe. He definitely improves us defensively. But with Kane gone we would lose a lot of offensive production. So it might balance out. Regardless, it'd be nice to give Jones a more legit top pairing partner even if the rest of the team still sucks.
