Faulk Trade Idea

Created by: Laynious
Team: 2017-18 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: May 29, 2017
Published: May 29, 2017
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Toronto needs a top RHD and a backup goalie for next year. Rumour has it that Carolina is looking to unload Faulk and one of their goalies. So naturally there is a fit there and I am curious if this is a good deal for both sides. Toronto sends: Kapanen, Dermott and a 1st -Kapanen is a must as a center piece going the other way. Canes need some scoring up front. Dermott give the Canes a cost effective very good D prospect and a mid round 1st in a weak draft. Carolina sends Faulk and Lack: -Canes lose a young top pairing D man and a backup goalie. Both positions here have too many players and the Canes biggest trade chip that they are willing to give up is Faulk.

Rumor that canes are looking to move Faulk?

Kapanen is nice prospect but doesn't get u anywhere near Faulk + Canes have plenty of LD prospects already so Dermott doesn't add much value for canes.

Don't think Canes would trade for prospect though it appears than both Kapanen and Dermot could be in the NHL next season. Canes would. be looking for immediate help maybe on the wings
Brown, Hyman and Rychel for Faulk.

Disagree 100% about Dermott not adding value. He would be one of their top LHD prospects instantly. Also you are getting a cap dump in Lack for basically a 1st rd pick. I believe value is there.

I doubt Leafs want to give up Brown. I think he has more value to the Leafs then Kapanen but Kapanen has a wack load of potential. Maybe even more then Brown. But I could see adding Hyman in that trade.

Laynious, I agree that the Leaf do not want to trade Brown or even Hyman. I might be in the minority but I think they will be offered long term contracts this summer. Where are not they agree to the deals would be up to the players. Shanny, Lou and Mike are trying to create "a family" and who prefer to keep the young core growing together instead of making marginally better personnel trades.
With their cap, they should be acquire "unwanted" Dmen that can help at least short term. My thoughts are Dermot and Kapanen. Leafs see Dermot and a long term LHD, and might even replace Gardiner who is UFA in two years. Leafs have young LWers with Marlies, but no one is really a scorer. I see RHS Kapanen, moving to JVR's LW spot when JVR leaves as a UFA.
Carolina has a young core too, and it maybe they prefer to keep it together including Faulk and add to their team by not trading their core too.

I agree as well...but my take on that is if they see Leivo as an option to fill in the JVR void when he leaves then that's where he will play. Kapanen, of all our prospect wingers we are willing to move, has the most value to other teams. Speed, scoring and he's a very good penalty killer. Leafs are very high on Gardiner and I don't think they will let him go as a free agent unless there is a cap hell kind of situation. But even then they will trade him to get something. Adding a guy like a Faulk (who is 25) is younger then Gardiner and I think a better all around D then Gardiner as well. Long term is right up the alley of a young core "growing up" together.

Dermott can be taken out of this trade and we could add in Hyman and Rychel and I think that would be maybe a better trade. It would look like this:

    Kapanen
    Hyman
    Rychel
    2017 1st

    for

    Faulk
    Lack ($1,000,000 retained)

Laynious, I think you're last deal would be much more acceptable to the Canes, if they believe Kapanen and Hyman are NHL starters (I do).
Regarding Gardiner.....just by definition "Unrestricted Free Agent". means the player has a choice of 31 NHL teams. Doesn't matter what the his current teams wants. Let's imagine the Leafs aren't going to resign him, it doesn't mean the Leafs should trade him either. Gee the Leaf might be in a Cup run in the spring of 2019 and will need him. Same as this upcoming year with Bozak and JVR. They might not be resigned but unless you get immediate help coming back to the Leafs in a trade, it weakens the team in a playoff run in 2018.

Fair enough point on the playoff run. If they are in the thick of it then Gardiner isn't going anywhere. Same with JVR and Bozak. Frankly I don't think the Leafs do anything like this this year anyway. I believe stay the course is what they will do. Maybe sign a guy like Del Zotto and bring back Polak a let Marincin and Marchenks go thru waivers or get drafted.

BTW I know what unrestricted free agent means lol cheerscheers

Value is way off, Carolina will be asking for marner or nylander. You gotta give something up if you want someone like Faulk

Carolina would want a proven NHL top 6 forward back atleast. None of the components in that trade match that at the moment
