Why on earth would TO add cap and move out a defenceman for another bottom 6 forward?

I don't see Ottawa being a good fit for Horvat. They need a proper right d upgrade. Schenn is a bottom pair RD. Helps but they should use their assets to upgrade their D long term. Or keep their RD prospects (like JBD and Thomson) and see if one pans out in that role. I can see Toronto going after Horvat and Schenn though. 1st, Niemela, Engvall. Maybe add a 3rd.

Calgary says no.

Toronto Says no.

I don't know. CGY probably could live with moving Tanev, and Boeser finding his game in CGY isn't farfetched. 6.65m x3 could be a very team friendly deal. If they need scoring help, it might be worth doing for Calgary.

Leafs and Flames call each other to gossip about your bad offers behind your back.

I don't know enough about Ottawa to know for sure, but I suspect they decline as well. They're still rebuilding and that is not a "rebuilding move"

Ottawa isn't in a "rebuild mode" anymore, as the trade for Debrincat proves it. I will say it is probably better to use the assets in this trade for a top 4D instead of Horvat, even though I really like Horvat as a replacement for Norris this season given his injury.

Fair. But their core is still very young, expectations are not sky high yet (but they will be), I'm not a Sens fan, but I look at what they're building and think a little patience could be huge.

I really think JBD is going to be a top 4 NHL defenseman soon. And a top 4 of Chabot, Sanderson, Zub, and JBD, looks pretty good to me. Plus with all the talk of how deep the 2023 draft is, no team should be trading a 1st for a rental.

Maybe it's just me, but I think the short term gain wouldn't be worth it in this case.

No, Tanev is absolutely not available. If you think Tanev is expendable you clearly didn't watch the playoffs last year when he got injured. While Boeser may find his game in Calgary it is certainly not worth the loosing the top pure shutdown defenseman in the league

The Flames did fall apart when he was gone, but weakening the defense a bit to improve the offense isn't all that bad, when you take into account that Tanev is 32 and he has a ton of miles on him. The way he plays might end up with them losing him again anyways. Yes, Boeser has his fair share of injuries too, but he is 25. I think that's enough to at least consider the trade if there's enough confidence that Boeser would be scoring 30 goals at the least, and that he would be able to remain healthy. At the end of the day, Suter is a defensive coach, so he might say no, but it's still a trade worth considering on Calgary's side.

Completely disagree. Calgary has a lot of TDL cap space to work with this year but very little space to work with next year. Tanev is also a leader on the team and in the dressing room. It would be far more beneficial to add a top end rental at the deadline for futures than move out a key component to the team

That's a strong argument, replacing leadership isn't easy, and they do have other avenues to improve upfront.

They could go the rental/trade block route, but I still think they would be comparing Boeser vs. what they would have to give up for Kane or Meier. So, they are still considering the trade, I could be wrong maybe they say no right away. You do have me convinced though that they would conclude that they rather keep Tanev, especially if they can get the likes of Kane.
