with a Q/O of 10M (1yr)... so it's kind of hard to guess what will happen with Meier

He’s not getting close to that. He’ll likely get 8-8.25 mill on a long term deal

This is one of the things that might happen
but it's probably the most unrealistic one
Sharks will resign him or at least provide the QO to retain his RFA. He's not going to be let go as a UFA. That's just silly

      QO: 1 year, $10 million
      Arb: 1 year, $8.5 million

It wouldn’t be player elected arbitration, would only be team-elected, which means before the draft, at end of 2022–23 season.

That means SJS has to file for arbitration, then find a trade partner, then grant permission to negotiate a contract. From the player perspective, if he doesn’t get the contract he wants from new team, he can fall back on the Arb award just as he could have with the QO. So arb does not change those dynamics all that much.

No, I never said anything like that. I have said that no team offers him the QO. If he is not extended, I think UFA is a more likely outcome than him receiving his QO.

But higher chance he is extended beforehand.

      In order of most-realistic-to-least-realistic

      1. Sharks extend and keep him
      2. Sharks trade him at 2023 deadline
      3. Sharks take him to arbitration, extend him after Jan 2024
      4. Sharks trade his rights before arb elections
      5. Sharks take him to arbitration, trade him at 2024 deadline.
      6. Sharks let him walk as UFA in 2024
      7. Sharks let him walk as UFA in 2023 (no QO, no Arb)
      8. Sharks qualify him

I still disagree and think SJ would qualify before letting him walk as UFA
but for #6, how are they letting him walk to UFA in 2024 if they didn't provide a 1-yr deal to retain him through 2023?

The team takes him to arbitration in June 2023, which awards him one-year deal for 2023-24. San Jose would then have a narrow window between January and March in which they could trade him with an extension. In this scenario, they don’t trade him (either they are competing, cant find a suitor or whatever reason). And he ends up walking in July 2024.

my guess he signs a long term deal at roughly 8.5M... Q/O means only one year

When you think about it logically, taking a long term deal makes the most sense. Long term financial stability, probably north of $60 mil, or one year at $10 mil which is really a show me deal at that point. There’s also the thought of injuries, why take on year guaranteed with the possibility of getting injured and being SOL or sign 8 years and be set.

If I were his agent, I would definitely push for the longer term deal now, especially coming off a career year.

If I were the Sharks, I would be trade him at 2023 deadline or before 2023 draft. If he gets into 1-year extension, the options in both market and timing narrow considerably.

If I were acquiring team, I would wait until after 2023 draft and see if he gets brought to arbitration or qualified.
