Description
The way Isles fans should look at it is essentially Barzal/DeHaan for Nylander. They are the only two that would be roster players next season anyway. Toews is log jammed with so many talented d-men ahead of him and Dal Colle is still in the AHL for the same reasons. Draft picks are unproven commodities. It isn't as outlandish as you might think. I'm an Islanders fan myself.

As we briefly discussed on another arm-chair team, if you substitute Ryan Pulock in for Devon Toews (who really doesn't do anything for this trade except add a contract), I think the Leafs have a very hard time saying no to this deal. Perhaps the Leafs throw in a contract or 2 from low ceiling AHL players (ie Tobias Lindberg, Ranit Vailev).

Understandable! Toews is actually not just a filler contract, he is LHD but NHL ready. Great top-4 potential, won AHL's fastest skater last season and was actually paired with Pulock the whole season. I'm a little biased to Pulock as I just bought his jersey lol

This is slight overpayment, but not by much. Devon Toews could stay with the Isles in this deal and it'd still be fair.

However, if I had Nylander on my roster and someone wanted to trade for him, I'd demand overpaymeny too.

If you ask me, all we need to target this offseason is a #2 Center. Let the prospects develop; we're so strong at every position, we'll be a powerhouse in a few years if we just maje adjusting tradea until then.

But those are just my opinions. This is all just fine for what you're attempting.

How many times have we seen massive overpayment occur in NHL trades? It's the nature of the beast.

Unfortunately, your premises bank on John Tavares resigning with the Islanders, correct? In my honest opinion, short of a Stanley Cup next season, I am not sure there is much NY can do to keep him around. And to answer what I am sure will be your follow-up, no, I do not think Tavares should or would sign any deal with the Leafs if he became a UFA.

I mean, Nylander's great and would take a lot to acquire, but i don't see him picking up 2 top prospects, another good prospect, a top 4 d-man, a 1st and a 2nd. Just my opinion though.

Stud rookies are not often traded. I actually cannot think of the last time a rookie came off such a spectacular rookie year and was traded that offseason. It's hard to find comparables in recent NHL history. I think NYI has the prospect depth to accommodate this move though and a couple of the players listed in the deal are blocked at getting NHL shots anyway.

he has stated so many times that he wants to be here long term and wants to play for one team in his career it's ridiculous to me that ppl still are convinced he's leaving via free agency, the guy is extremely loyal and i could just not see him lying all this time and leave to go elsewhere to a team who is likely to be just as good or worse than the isles are considering teams that are much better probably won't have the cap room for a 10 million dollar player
