Can the Wild get a top 10 pick

Created by: MNCountryClub
Team: 2022-23 Minnesota Wild
Initial Creation Date: Nov. 16, 2022
Published: Nov. 17, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
There's a lot of frustration in the Wild fanbase, which has some ppl asking for a tank. A common response is that the Wild are too good to tank, unless you completely gutted the roster. Homers are saying stay the course, doomers are saying tank.

So the question is - could the Wild attain a top 10 pick without completely gutting the roster? That is, are they bad enough where the MN 1st falls top 10.

--------------

MAF is out at least a week or two
Hartman is out long term
Greenway is clearly hurt and could be shelfed for awhile
Send Rossi down
Ice a 3rd pair of Merrill Goose
Waive or play Jost

------------

Does the below team finish bottom 10? I think it does.
Trades
1.
MIN
OTT
  1. Dumba, Matt ($3,000,000 retained)
Additional Details:
Using OTT as a placeholder, but can be anyone. Point is just to show Dumba off the roster. Presume some deal is worked out where MN retains 50%.
2.
MIN
COL
  1. Gaudreau, Frédérick
Additional Details:
Again - just using COL as a placeholder. Can be anyone and just assume a fair market price is worked out.

I'm not sure Dumba gets a 1st. If there was a team, maybe the Leafs. Not sure how you would turn those rentals into a top 10 pick. Maybe the best bet is your own pick. If there was an extention with either of those guys then chances would increase.

The premise of this is that the team itself is bad enough where the Wild's 1st is top 10. Not that one of these players returns a top 10.

Neither Dumba nor Gaudreau return a 1st, and most definitely not a top 10 1st.

I see. I don't think a top 10 pick is likely this coming draft. I think even doing poorly, Wild will still get a wildcard spot. It's a tough place to be in.

Yeah I think the "problem" is that they eventually will get healthy and when that happens, they probably claw back enough to finish above bottom 10.

I'm not convinced they're a WC team, but they are likely better than bottom 10.

The roster above is pretty dang bad though. If they run this for an extended period of time, they could be bottom 10 come end of DEC.

They can easily self-sabotage themselves by running:
Kap/Jost/Zucc
Boldy/Rossi/Foligno
Greenway/JEE/Hartman
Duhaime/Freddy G/Dewar (Shaw/Steel)

Injuries have hurt the team, but even healthy they have a glaring hole at 1C. It just throws the entire lineup out of whack.

Do you think they'd finish bottom 10 if they were to run a self-sabotaged type of lineup?

Leafs are full on D. Unless they've suddenly given up on Sandin putting it together they're solid on the right, save for maybe a 3RD. Maybe not even then, Benn's looked pretty good as a 7D.

They've got Rielly - Brodie, Giordano - Liljegren, and Sandin - Holl. There's no need for a #1RD.

Ottawa has the cap and the need for a top RD, if they turn it around by the TDL I think they'd be interested.

Yep.
-Boldy looks like he hates life when on a line with Foligno.
-Jost and Rossi are o-zone black holes and meh in the d-zone.
-The 3rd line might be too good? So you could swap Duhaime and Hartman.
-This lineup would putting up 2g or less most night.

If you had say Horvat quality 1C then you're 3 to 4 goals a game with this:
Kap/Horvat/Zucc
Greenway/JEE/Boldy (I think this will be better than the GREEF line was)
Foligno/Freddy G/Hartman
Duhaime/Dewar/Shaw (Steel)

The lack of a 1C and Jost/Rossi just sucking the life out of every line they are on is killing a team that could be a contender.

Even at full strength this team is 2-4 players from being a legit Cup contender! 2 of them need to be top 6 forwards, preferably both centers.
