86MM Mission Cap -202324

Created by: Dr_Invictus
Team: 2023-24 Calgary Flames
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 24, 2022
Published: Nov. 21, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Assuming NHLPA clears escrow and the Cap goes up Next year to 86MM. Off Season trades & Signings. Konecny seems like Sutter's type of player. He's also Horvat's cousin, which may help with signing him. He would do well with Kadri or Horvat IMO. I moved Coleman and Taffoli for cap space. Most of Calgary's contracts come off the books the following year so decisions will have to be made. However, BT has always been good at resigning players to decent contracts (just not FAs).

Interesting trade for TK. But Tk has proven he can put up points on his own, Mangiapane has struggled in the point getting departement this year, but probably a little better defensively.

This is next season, so it would be 3x4.9MM. Even with Zegras and Terry to resign, Anaheim still has tons of cap and a lot of ELCs. He's a better fit in Anaheim than Calgary IMO. He's defensively sound, has less wear and tare than most players his age because he started paying later. I agree, the contract is overpriced by 1MM AAV, but Anaheim could use the stability.

We have veterans to mentor the kids. Henrique, Silfverberg, Strome, Vatrano. Just because we have the cap space doesn't mean we want to burn it on bottom 6 guys.

Yeah, I would attribute that to Sutter shifting the lines constantly. Nobody has time to develop chemistry on this team. Not to mention they are rolling the 3rd and 4th lines way too often. Not sure if Torts will be the same problem for him. Neither coach seems to mesh with young talented players well.

I disagree with you. Our cap space gets eaten up real quick this summer and then we will still have more guys to sign before his contract is off the books. It just doesn’t make sense

Do you think they'll keep Silverberg? I can't see them resigning him, and certainly not at that AAV.

Probably not, or if we do, its a cheap deal, but he is signed until the end of the 23-24 season, as is Rico. At which point some of the kids have to start growing into the roles they will take.

I don't hate the idea of a Coleman type player, we could use someone like him, but 4.9 mil and trade protection for multiple years is brutal for a 3rd line guy.

While I suppose value is fine I fail to see the point for New Jersey in trading Tyce away for Toffoli when there are plenty of interesting winger options in FA for the Devils to target.
Tarasenko, Bunting, Kuzmenko etc etc...

True. My thought is that the price for Taffoli is low relative to the value and term remaining. FAs are almost always overpaid and for too long. Do you really want Taresenko for 7 years?

Not 7, more like 4 years for Tarasenko if it were up to me.
I don't think there'd be any team out there willing to offer him 7 years fwiw.

Of the three I mentioned I'd prefer the Devils to go after Bunting, think he'd be great for the Devils at something like 5m x 7 years.

Yeah, it's definitely a limitation. Coleman is from Texas so I figured he would only waive for a warm state closer to home. Granted, 3 years as the cap increases at 4.9MM AAV will be less and less. It's more about the roster spot.
