This could be a good thing as long as they remain in the playoff picture. Newhook is now forced to step up his game, it won't be instantaneous but perhaps he will break out. It's also a test for the rest of the roster too. Many teams only have 3 solid defenders in their top 4.

The Avs are without Josh Manson, Bowen Byram, and Kurtis MacDermid and they still have one of the better defence groups in the NHL.
