Quoting: Nighthawk
Newhook is a minimum. Av’s homers neither understand the cup window is now & they ignore that along with that they could resign Horvat if they really want to. Many contracts come off the books. A far better chance of repeating with Horvat than Newhook as 2C. Av’s have the D but not the C depth.
Yes they can extend
No they actually can't extend and retain any kind of depth. Can they extend in a vacuum? Of course they can, any team can if they want to gut the rest of the team. Can they extend realistically? Absolutely not. As for your Avs homer comment (though I'm not even sure I should deign to respond to it), we know full well how long our team's cup window is open for because we actually follow that team. That's why we keep telling you canuckleheads it won't work but you won't listen. Because we know OUR team. Show me a REALISTIC Avs team for next year with Horvat extended at 8 mil plus (as that's the figure that's being bandied about as a MINIMUM) in addition to MacKinnon's extension and Byram re-signed at a realistic figure, and the rest of the team not gutted. I'll wait with bated breath!
Example: Avs trade Newhook and the '24 1st to the Canucks for Horvat and Horvat is willing to sign 7 years at 8 mil per. Byram signs a 3 year bridge at 4.5 mil per. EJ comes back on a 1 year league minimum deal (775k- very unlikely he does that). MacKinnon's extension kicks in adding 6.3 mil to his hit. The Avs have a roster of 17 signed, Landeskog, MacKinnon, Rantanen, Lehkonen, Nichushkin, Horvat, Makar, Toews, Girard, Byram, Manson, Johnson, Georgiev, Francouz, MacDonald, O'Connor, MacDermid, that leaves 2.95 mil to sign a further 6 players to run a full roster. Even if the Avs run a short roster it's still extremely tight to sign even the minimum 3 required, and the depth quality is going to suffer. The top 6 and D are great, bottom 6 and depth are woeful. You don't win with just two lines, and God help them if they hit injury troubles again like this year! It also basically guarantees one of Toews or Girard are gone the following year.
