Handling Austin and his contract this offseason

Created by: ReginaSask
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Dec. 16, 2022
Published: Dec. 17, 2022
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
First off let me say we should offer him a new deal starting for 24-25 at 15m x 8 years. That would make him the highest paid player in the league at a time when the cap should be up considerably.

However, if he shows no willingness to sign such an extension to make him a life long Leaf, then we have the situation we all are wishing to avoid. No one wants to trade a guy who clearly one of the top 3 or so players in hockey. These are the kind of trades that rarely occur. However, these are a few hypothetical deals to get Auston back to the states should he want to go that route.

I’m also assuming Muzzin heads down the path of no return with this injury. If he is available next season then we’d have to dump him.

That is a really terrible offer for Matthews. 2 older players and 2 very late 1sts?

Also, Vegas cant afford it.

Karlsson is trash, And isn't living up to his contract.

Don't see Vegas trading Shea Theodore anytime soon.

And Vegas can't afford Auston Matthews @ 8 years and around $14,000,000 to $15,000,000 per AAV,

Now, I'm going on record in saying that Matthews will not resign with the Leafs. Not that it's the Leafs fault, but check the definition of UFREEAgent.
Leafs will be a good team next season. They have a choice of going all in with their UFAs...Matthews, Nylander and Brodie, or not comp[eting but getting futures and cap for 2024/25.

Personally, I would like to get futures and free cap instead of Karlsson and Theodore. If Matthews is traded, I could see at the TDL in February 2024. A retained cap is probably affordable by his new team, and the Leafs wouldn't have to take back much cap...maybe just for one season. Then the new team can offer him an eight year contract. I think it's Los Angeles. Kopitar 10m comes off the books in 2024.

I find it hilarious that MacKinnon signed for less than 13 but Matthews will for sure go for over 14 why? Because it's the Leafs and it's the rules. Matthews will sign for 13.5 x 8 or less term. 15 a season means one of Nylander or Marner is out, and Matthews won't want to stay and see that happen. This nonsense that he's definitely going to leave is just ridiculous.b

He's on record saying he would have signed longer term when he signed his current deal and just this season has called TO home. He's not going anywhere this is just the constant troll nation talk that has people thinking he's 100% going to leave. He isn't, he loves TO it's a great team that will contend until he's 34.

So you're calling me a troll because I voiced my opinion about Matthews next contract? Of course he isn't going to throw his the Leafs under the bus by saying he is looking at possible other signing options in 2024. Why do fans believe what a GM, coach, or player say publicly?

No sorry, I am not calling you a troll. My point is troll nation has been saying for years that the Leafs can't keep their core together. They couldn't sign Nylander and they did. They couldn't sign Matthews and they did. Definitely couldn't keep Marner and they did, that meant Rielly was 100% going to leave and here we are. Now it's a 100% certainty that Matthews leaves because he's American and doesn't want to play in Canada also because he refuses to sign long term. Well that doesn't make sense with the actual facts. Matthews said he was open to signing for more term but it would have driven the cost up and the Leafs found a compromise. Both him and Dubas said as much, now this year he said he loves TO and it's become home. We know he is fiercely competitive and loves the spotlight, where does he get more spotlight and a better chance of winning than the team he's on?

All of that is an easy conclusion to draw but troll nation has been beating the belief that everyone will leave for years and I think it's beaten down a lot of leaf fans who are believing it themselves. So no you aren't a troll but you seem to accept the troll nation rhetoric surrounding Matthew.

Unfortunately a team isn’t going to unload their entire prospect pool for a year of any player. This is why we better get him resigned.

Matthews is the second best player in the league and the best two way centre in the league.

The problem with that is why would we trade him next spring when it’s likely the team will be in a similar position? Also, prospects aren’t going to help a team win anytime soon. I see a trade more in line with the Tkachuk situation even if it’s this offseason.

And? MacKinnon is the 3rd best player in the league and isn't making 15.

He isn’t resigning when the cap goes over 90 million. That’s what’s most projections have for where the cap is heading in 2 years. It could even be 95 million.

So it was projected to go up as much as 4 next season but the NHL has said only 1 million. Do you honestly believe it's going to jump over 6 million the next season ? Matthews is eligible to sign an extension after July 1. By then we will know the cap is going up 1 million next year and we'll get some sort of projection for the year after but nothing concrete. Despite the "known facts" on the site saying Matthews is greedy and Dubas always overpays, he's not going to ask for everything he can get because he'll know it'll mean his best friends and elite teammates will have to be traded if he does. He won't. 13.5 is what he'll get.

Actually I listen very very little sport nation talk. I watch games. And I never believe what players, coaches or GMs say in front of a microphone
Matthews initial dislike for the Leafs organization was with the incompetent head coach Babcock. He might have signed for longer term if he had known Babcock would be fired.
Of course the Leafs could have their core four....Nylander, Marner and Matthews were all RFAs. Now when they will be UFAs, that's a different scenario.
I have no doubt that Matthews loves playing for the Leafs or even live in Toronto. I just think he might love LA more. And no reason to think that the Kings just might be very good team very soon with young core and more to come.

Yeah Babs wore out his welcome very quickly, and alienated many young players. However, it had no bearing on his 2nd contract. As I mentioned both Matthews and Dubas said longer term was discussed. Both said this was the best compromise. Longer term at that time would have cost closer to 13 million and 5 year was the right cap for both sides. Now they will get it done next summer quickly, neither side will want it to drag on. Then it'll be Nylander's turn. It's going to happen
