Winnipeg needs to get rid of Schmidt's contract. Drop the retention on Hamonic and add Schmidt. What is needed by Ottawa to make this deal?

At a minimum, Ottawa would need Winnipeg to take Zaitsev and retain some salary on Schmidt.

We are heading into a cap crunch next summer, so it doesn't make much sense for Ottawa.

I think Seattle would take that deal if they are shopping for goaltending help at the deadline, Talbot would provide some stability at least for this season and a 2023 3rd round pick is a more than reasonable cost for him. If Talbot keeps this up and stays healthy, I wouldn't be surprised if Ottawa could get a little more than that for him, especially after retaining 50% of his salary.

We need to sign DeBrincat + Pinto and then fill out the rest of the roster with additional players for next season.

With only 17 million in cap space.

To alleviate the cap crunch, we need to dump Zaitsev and take on less salary, not more.



That's why taking on Schmidt just to make what is supposed to be a very simple trade at the deadline doesn't make any sense at all for us.
